Punjab University VC removes neutral registrar
LAHORE, Jan 03, 2008: Punjab University acting
vice chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Muhammad Arif Butt, in a sudden move while
exercising emergency powers under the Section 15(3) of the PU Act, replaced PU
registrar Prof Dr Naeem Khan with Prof Dr Zafar Iqbal Jadoon.
The
notification of Dr Naeem's removal was issued on Tuesday night and the new
registrar took the charge on Wednesday. Dr Jadoon is presently working as
Institute of Administrative Sciences director.
Pro-IJT teachers on the
campus had been criticising Dr Naeem for being hard on the IJT. PU teachers and
students said Dr Naeem's "untimely removal" was the result of his anti-IJT
policies. They criticised the PU acting vice chancellor.
A group of PU
teachers, they said, who had a soft corner for the IJT were behind the decision.
Governor Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool, who is also PU Chancellor, is likely
to visit PU on Thursday (today). It is expected that the governor will announce
Dr Naeem's new responsibilities.
Dr Jadoon had served the IJT during his
academic career. He is also a member of the pro-IJT teachers group, PU Academic
Staff Association (PUASA).
Dr Arif Butt said that Dr Naeem's
removal was a routine matter. He said the governor's visit to PU was also a
routine matter.
Dr Naeem said that he had met with the governor at
Governor's House on Tuesday. He said the governor would hold a meeting on
Thursday (today) with the PU VC and other senior professors. During his tenure,
he said, he had tried to solve problems amicably.
A PU teacher said Dr
Naeem had issued a statement saying that he (Dr Naeem) would arrange a
condolence reference for Benazir Bhutto. He said Dr Naeem could have been
removed in connection with his statement. He said Dr Arif Butt had appointed Dr
Jadoon, a relative of former Jamaat-e-Islami amir Mian Tufail Ahmad.
A
PU student said Dr Naeem had taken a number of decisions against IJT, which made
him popular among students.
Dr Naeem had presented his services before
the Vice Chancellor Search Committee for PU VC slot. He was appointed PU
registrar on March 24, 2005. Before his appointment as registrar, he served as
Fisheries and Wildlife Department dean at the University of Veterinary and
Animal Sciences. He had also served as Punjab Fisheries Department director from
1996 to 2003. Having a good repute, Dr Naeem always opposed IJT on moral and
legal grounds. Daily Times
