Punjab academic year likely to start from April
Lahore, Jan 26, 2008: The Punjab and the Federal Education
departments will meet on February 4 to consider starting the academic year of
schools from April, instead of September, Punjab Education secretary Qazi Afaq
Ahmed said on Friday.
He said the hot weather in summer,
short attendance during the harvest and load shedding of electricity were the
main reasons propelling the departments to think about changing the start of the
academic year.
He said educationalists from all provinces would
participate in the meeting to finalise the matter.
He said the Sindh
Education Department had first taken the decision to start the academic year
from April. The change should also be made in Punjab, he added.
Muttahida Assatza Mahaz Punjab president Hafiz Abdul Nasir said the
majority of schoolteachers were not satisfied with the current academic year
(September to August) and they had been demanding that it be started from April,
as it did not suit them and the students.
He said the department changed
the start of the academic year from April to January five years ago, but the
experience did not work. "It was changed from January to September two years
ago, but again it failed," he added.
He said the private education system
started their academic year from April, but due to the lack of planning it began
from September in the public education sector.
He said around 80 percent
of the students were studying in metric and intermediate classes in the rural
Punjab, and they were associated with agriculture. Nasir said, "Annual
examinations are generally held during the harvest when parents force their
children to work with them in fields, which consequently harms their (students')
studies."
Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education chairman Dr
Zakriya Butt said the board had suggested to the Federal Education Department to
start the academic year from April. He said schools in rural areas remained
short of attendance and the students had little time to prepare for their
examinations due to the current academic year.
He said load shedding of
electricity was another reason behind the proposed change in the academic year.
The annual examinations would be conducted in May and June when the power
shortage would most likely increase, adding to the students' troubles ahead of
their examinations, he added. He said the teachers and the students would have
more time to prepare for the examinations with the implementation of the new
academic calendar.
Masroor Ahmed, a primary schoolteacher, said the new
academic calendar would help them guide the students through their course in a
better way. Daily Times
