QAU students, teachers pay homage to Benazir
Islamabad, Jan 03, 2008: Teachers and students of the Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU)
offered 'fateha' for the departed soul of Benazir Bhutto in two ceremonies here
on Wednesday.
The first ceremony was organised by the Academic Staff
Association in front of Dr. Raziuddin Siddiqui Library in which teachers were
the main participants. They observed a two-minute silence to pay homage to the
slain leader.
In a statement, the association expressed grief and sorrow
on the murder of the two-time prime minister and chairperson of the PPP. It says
"May Allah bless her soul with eternal peace and tranquillity and give fortitude
to her grieved family and the entire nation to bear the irreparable
loss."
The second but a much larger gathering was held near the main
fountain of the university. It was participated by students, employees, teachers
and other people.
On the occasion, QAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Qasim
Jan paid a glowing tribute to the PPP leader who symbolised the federation of
Pakistan and had a following in all federating units and AJK.
He said
"We should carry on her mission by strengthening unity amongst provinces and
work for the consolidation of the country for which Benazir Bhutto sacrificed
her life."
He urged people not to cause any damage to life and property,
"as we all are Pakistanis and have to build the nation." Referring to sectarian
clashes in Parachinar, a neighbouring locality of his hometown in NWFP, the vice
chancellor said "This is high time we shun our differences and work for the
uplift of the country."
Qari Muhammad Yasin recited verses from the Holy
Qur'aan and prayed for Benazir Bhutto and others who died in the Liaquat Bagh
tragedy on December 27, the Karsaz bomb blast on October 18 and other such
incidents.
