First ever Sindhi to Punjabi dictionary by March
LAHORE, Jan 03, 2008: The first ever Sindhi to
Punjabi dictionary is likely to be introduced into the market by the end of
March, it was said on Wednesday.
The Punjab Institute of Language, Art
and Culture (PILAAC) will publish the dictionary. The dictionary includes
transcription of every word to teach the reader a word's right pronunciation and
its meanings. The dictionary will be a valuable manuscript for those who want to
study the common patterns of Punjabi and Sindhi languages. It will also help
those who want to study the Sindhi literature but are not familiar with the
language.
PILAAC Director Dr Shaista Nuzhat said that: "It
has taken two years to complete the dictionary." She said a team comprising
Sindhi and Punjabi linguists and intellectuals had been working thoroughly on
the composition of the dictionary. Asif Raza led the linguists' team that
included Dr Nabi Buksh, Hyderabad University former vice chancellor Ghulam Ali
Allana, Dr Saeed Bhutta and many others, she added.
"The dictionary will
educate the people of Punjab and Sindh about each other's language and help in
neutralising the mutual differences."
Nuzhat said, "PILAAC aims at
producing harmony between the people in the four provinces and the dictionary
will promote the cause." She said the cultural exchange between the provinces
could ensure Pakistan's integrity.
She said PILAAC had been translating
Sindhi Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai's poetry into Punjabi that would also
be completed by March. She said those who wanted to read Sindhi literature could
benefit from its translation into Punjabi. Daily Times
