Textbook board chief removed over book delay
Karachi, Jan 25, 2008: The Sindh Textbook Board has
failed to provide 30 million books to students from classes one to 10 within the
assigned time period because of which the educational year may not begin in
April.
Orders were issued by Sindh Caretaker Chief Minister Abdul Qadir
Halepoto to remove board's chairman Shamsuddin Solongy from his post which was
on a 12-month contract.
According to sources, the board had to print the
books from January to February for which it had purchased paper worth 300
million rupees but no contracts were signed for the printing.
Sources in
the education department claim that a proposal to start the educational year
from August is being considered as a result of the lack of textbooks and the
upcoming general elections. "An inter-provincial meeting will be held February 4
to discuss the issue. Federal Education Minister Shams Qasim Lakha will chair
the meeting. While secretaries of the education department will also
participate," said Sindh Education Department spokesman Akhtar Hussain
Surahio.
According to the board's secretary Qadir Bux Rind, the decision
to remove the chairman has been made although he is still in charge of the
board. Rind declined to comment any further on the issue.
Sources claim
that Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh may be appointed the new chairman as he previously
worked as an in-charge chairman during Dr Hameeda Khuhro tenure as the Sindh
Education minister. Daily Times
