UET to have entire PhD faculty by 2030
LAHORE, Jan 05, 2008: The University of Engineering
and Technology (UET) has set a target, called Vision 2030, according to which
the entire faculty of the school will possess doctorate degrees and the strength
of students will have increased to 15,000 by 2030.
UET Architecture and
Planning dean Prof Dr Syed Shabiulhassan Zaidi said the school had planned to
improve its infrastructure and network. We will, he said, expand the campus and
improve the faculty's qualification level and number of students. New hostels
and laboratories would be constructed, he said. "We are sending our faculty
abroad for PhD studies because currently we have only four who are PhD
holders."
Zaidi said the two new campuses, one in Kala Shah Kaku and the
other in Faisalabad, would start functioning from October and 5,700 students
would be enrolled in these campuses. He said the school was working to enhance
the capability of the main campus so that the number of students could be
doubled. "Currently, there are 7,000 students and 400 faculty members, but the
demand for engineering education is rapidly increasing and the university needs
to expand itself," he said, and added, "The school has already expanding its
departments from 10 to 21, improved the main campus and built two sub-campuses
in the last three years."
Another faculty member said President Pervez
Musharraf had announced a grant of Rs 5 billion during his address at the UET's
convocation held in March 2007. He said the Higher Education Commission had
later approved Rs 5.9 billion for the school to implement its expansion
plans.
The UET enrolled an additional 700 students in four disciplines
for its sub-campus in Kala Shah Kaku in 2007. The students, however, suffered
because the campus had not been built by then.
UET student Kashif said
students were waiting for the sub-campuses to start functioning.
Zaidi
said construction was in the final phase and students would be shifted to the
sub-campuses once construction was finished. Daily Times
