Students take over Urdu University
Islamabad, Jan 18, 2008: The
students of Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST)
have taken over the control of the university premises and are not allowing even
the administration to enter their offices.
Though the university remained
closed till January 22nd, following students' protests demanding the appointment
of a permanent VC and registration of Electrical Engineering department with the
Pakistan Engineering Congress (PEC) but the administration offices were still
open and they used to perform their routine business. As the demands of the
students were not met by the authorities, the students locked the university
building on Thursday morning and the teachers and other staff was also not
allowed to go inside.
The university had been opened on January 14 after
weeks long closure by the Higher Education Commission due to the students'
protest that had started from December 14. Though the university has since been
closed, the students are staging peaceful protests on a daily basis to meet
their genuine demands.
The students demanded the appointment of a permanent
Vice Chancellor of the university and the registration of the department of
Electrical Engineering with the PEC. The department was established three years
before and the first batch is about to graduate but still the PEC has not
recognised this discipline.
The students say the ultimate solution of all
the problems is the appointment of a permanent Vice Chancellor, as the acting VC
has no decision-making power and cannot hire the faculty, which is one of the
major problems of this university. They said that the HEC has blocked the
funding of the university because there is no single authority and the funds are
misused by the administration instead of spending on the university.
An
official from the administration, while criticising the students, said it is not
in their hands to appoint a VC. The HEC has assured that the things will become
normal within days but the students are not behaving properly. The teachers and
administration have been compelled to sit on roads and hotels outside the
university.
"Examinations are getting late, we have to arrange salaries for
the staff but no one is allowed to go inside. At least they should respect their
teachers who are not responsible for the crisis", teachers and administration
said. The Nation
