'Expelled' student appears in PU exams
Lahore: An 'expelled' student belonging to the
Islami Jamiat Tulaba (IJT) of the Punjab University (PU), who was also involved
in the PU firing case is appearing in the ongoing examinations at the PU Law
College. Ansar Shoaib was expelled from the PU for serious disciplinary
issues last year. A senior teacher from the PU Law College said Shoaib was
attempting the current examinations with the claim that he had appealed to the
vice-chancellor (VC) about his expulsion. He said the expelled student had
managed this with the help of other IJT activists, adding that the college
authorities could do nothing to stop him. He said it was pointless for Shoaib to
appear in the examinations, as he would not receive any result or
degree. The University Students Federation (USF) – which claims to have
informed the administration about the presence of expelled students in the
examination hall - criticised the university authorities for not taking any
action. In a press statement, USF activists criticised the fact that an expelled
student, who was banned from the campus, had managed to appear in the
examination. They said Shoaib was also nominated in the December 3 firing
incident. According to a PU official, the PU administration, upon being
informed about the incident, rushed to the examination hall but IJT activists
did not listen to them. He said the university administration had asked the
local police on several occasions to take action against expelled students, but
they had failed to take any action yet. Not eligible: PU registrar
Professor Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan said if any appeal was pending with the VC, the
expelled student was not eligible to sit in the examinations. He said the
administration had instructed the PU examinations controller not to issue any
result cards to expelled students. "If any expelled student manages to sneak in
the examination hall it does not mean he would also receive the result," he
said. "We will probe the matter and ensure the expulsion orders are implemented
properly," he added. He said they would ask the authorities concerned to brief
the administration on how an expelled student managed to appear in the
examinations. Stay order: PU IJT nazim Qaiser Sharif said Shoaib was
student of Law in the 5th semester, adding that he had a stay order from court.
He said Governor Salmaan Taseer had ordered a fair inquiry of the
expelled students, adding that they were students of the varsity until any final
decisions had been made.

Lahore High Court seeks BISE reply on re-assessment plea
Lahore: The Lahore High Court on Monday sought a report from the
chairman of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Lahore, in a
petition seeking re-evaluation of papers of two FSc students on the plea that
the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had ruled in favour of reassessment in Farah
Hameed Dogar's case. Petitioner Khadim Hussain said his two sons Usman
and Ali appeared in the FSc examination but he was not satisfied with their
result in the subjects of physics, chemistry and biology. He apprehended that
examiners deliberately gave them less marks. He said the IHC had held in
Farah Dogar's case last week that the tool of re-assessment was a check on the
ignorance and arbitrariness of the examiner. The petitioner said the benefit of
the IHC verdict should be given to all students who wanted their papers be
re-assessed. Dawn
