Cuba qualified doctors not sure of PMDC recognition
Islamabad: Pakistani medical students studying in Cuba are facing a
number of issues ranging from quality of education, duration of their course,
less stipend, transportation and above all acceptance of their degrees by the
Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) once they complete their studies.
In a recent correspondence with the ministry of foreign affairs, the
Pakistani embassy in Havana has sought an urgent visit of a delegation
comprising officials of the foreign office and the Higher Education Commission
and the project director HEC to Havana to sort out the issues with the Cuban
authorities and the students, it has been learnt. A total of 932 Pakistani
students are presently studying in Cuba under the islands scholarship programme.
The Cuban government offered 1,000 scholarships in the medical field after the
October 2005 earthquake. Pakistani Ambassador in Havana Najamus Saqib in
his letter to Pakistani authorities concerned, a copy has
underlined "the urgent need of providing all possible assurances to all
stakeholders for the successful completion of the scholarship programme".
The ambassador has also conveyed the stipulations raised by the students
who have expressed serious concerns over their future career in Pakistan,
particularly their registration with the PMDC. Similarly, the students
believe that they would only be issued a certificate instead of a proper medical
degree at the end of seven-year degree programme. They also have apprehensions
on the learning experience and the nature of curriculum. The students
strongly feel that in the absence of proper hospital training with proper
equipment, they would not become "qualified doctors" even after meeting the
Cuban standards in this regard. The students have serious reservations over the
quality of clinical//hospital training. Furthermore, due to such
stressful atmosphere, there have been instances of students developing serious
mental and psychological issues, the letter adds. Meanwhile, the
quantity and quality of food provided to the students, according to them, is not
adequate. Dawn

Importance of technology
Islamabad: Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Dr. Javaid R Leghari
has said that 97 per cent of students believe that technology is the single
common denominator, which makes our schools and students help bridge the
information divide. He stated this while addressing as chief guest at
the opening ceremony of a four-day 'Roots National Olympiad 2010', organised by
the Roots College International, Islamabad Campus. The event will sponsor
several competitions, including those of debates, performing arts, photography,
music, computer gaming, chess, live art, singing and various social events.
Over 500 students from various institutions are participating, including
those of the Fountainhead School, St. Mary's Academy, Lahore Grammar School,
Westminster College, The City School, Imperial International, Sheikh Zayed
International Academy, ACE International Academy, Bahria College and the
Satellite Town and DHA Campuses of Roots College International. Dr.
Leghari said that technology has become an indispensable tool in the education
of today's student, adding that some skills are thus needed to teach our
students and researchers - dealing with massive amount of information, dealing
with global communication, self-direction, and organizing more of own
self-learning. "We need to change our teaching methods to reflect the new
technology and implement 21st Century Skills to prepare the students and
researchers for jobs and challenges that do not exist yet," he said. He
also threw light on the significance of Google, Facebook, Linkedin and other
social, educational and entrepreneurial networks, and how technology has
ushered, influencing our lives for our informational and educational benefit.
"Pakistani students have the ability to go beyond the curriculum, classroom and
the faculty," he said and emphasised on the emerging challenges for the youth
and their solutions in his model of 'Complement, Collaborate and Compete.'
Later, the chief guest administered oath to the elected members of the
Roots student council and also announced the formal opening of the Roots
Olympiad 2010, saying the event would provide the youth with a platform to
express themselves not only as individuals, but more importantly as the
Pakistani nation, and would allow them to prove their mettle. It would provide
students with an opportunity not only to compete but also develop their
intellectual dimension through rigorous exchange of ideas, he
said. Faisal Mushtaq, Director Roots School System (RSS) and Roots
National Olympiad 2010, said the Roots Olympiad is a mega event, an exciting
palette of activities to bring out the Picassos and Beethovens from within the
students. RSS Founder Mrs Riffat Mushtaq, President National Institute
of Health Sciences Shahid Ahmed Khan, Director RSS Mrs Khadija Omair, Regional
