No classes in SU for 16 days
Hyderabad: Neither the Sindh governor nor the
provincial minister for education and not even other functionaries below
them have taken any notice of suspension of classes in the University
of Sindh for the past 16 days. The university teachers
stopped taking classes in protest against the murder of Prof Bashir
Ahmed Channar, director of students' affairs, who was gunned down on Jan
2 in broad daylight when he left office in his car for home. He was attacked by gunmen at the Allama LL Kazi roundabout. The
protest entered the 16th consecutive day on Wednesday without success
in drawing attention of the government. They demand removal of
Vice-Chancellor Dr Nazir Mughal. Naimatullah, president of the
Sindh chapter of the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic
Staff Association, said that a request had been sent to Sindh Governor
Dr Ishratul Ibad, who was chancellor of public universities of the
province, to meet teachers to discuss affairs of the university. Sindh
University Teachers Association president Dr Azhar Shah said that it
was strange the chancellor was not taking notice of the suspension of
classes for the past 16 days. Dr Shah said that teachers of Sindh
University and universities of Karachi would hold a sit-in at a city
hotel where an international conference on peace was being organised by
the Sindh University on Friday. Dawn

Removal of Gomal University VC demanded
Dera Ismail Khan: The Muttahida Talaba Mahaz on Wednesday alleged that vice-chancellor of
the Gomal University was not capable of running the institution and
asked the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor to remove him from the post
forthwith. Speaking at a press conference, student leaders
including Sherullah Wazir, Naeemullah Anjum, Arshad Akbari, Ashfaq Munir
and others asked the governor to remove the vice-chancellor and
director finance within three days or else they would take to the
streets. The student leaders belonging to the Tribal Students
Federation, Islami Jamiat Talaba, Insaf Students Federation and Pakhtun
Students Federation said the university administration wasn't interested
in solving the problems faced by the students. They said they
had not completed their course but date for the examinations had been
fixed. The Telecom Department, they said, had not been recognised but
students had been given admission there on self-finance basis. The fee
for admission and detailed marks certificate had also been increased
manifold, they complained.
