KU starts controversial BS programme

KARACHI, Jan 5(The Nation) - The controversial four-year Bachelor of Science (BS) degree programme and masters programme will be initiated at University of Karachi on Saturday (Jan 6, 2007) instead of the honours programme that had been implemented for several years at the KU.

More than 2,000 students, obtaining admissions in newly adopted BS programme-2007 and about 1,900 students who obtained admissions in masters programme, will start their higher learning educational career at the KU. Among them, female students are 80 percent, which leads towards female domination in the KU in context of their quantity.

The semester classes of BS and Masters programme would formally start on Monday (Jan 8), while the only introductory classes will be held on the first day (Saturday). The semester will be lasted till April 30 and the examination of the first semester is scheduled to be held from May 05 to 21.

However, different groups of the KU teachers have been opposing the programme proposed by the HEC and termed it as a conspiracy against the youth of the country, belonging to lower or middle classes.

It is worth mentioning that for the first time in the history of KU, the departments of Persian and Bengali have not received any application of the candidate; therefore these departments will remain deprived of new students batch. Only 2 students have got admission in Arabic dept while 5 student obtained admission in Sindhi dept, a source at the campus told The Nation on Thursday. He said that strong tendency was found among the candidates in obtaining admissions in the departments of Microbiology and Biochemistry, where large number applications were received.

In the arts faculty, department of International Relations, Mass Communication, Political Science and Economics went higher in term of receiving applications of candidates seeking admissions in the master programme.

The KU administration has also initiated the BS programme at 21 different departments in evening shift. According to KU official, about 1,550 students have got admission in the evening programme so far.

However, this programme will be instituted initially at 11 departments of arts faculty including, English, International Relations, Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Women Studies, Special Education, Mass Communication, Commerce, Public Administration, Business Administration.

In the science faculty, there are 8 departments where it would be commenced, including Physiology, Biochemistry, Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Zoology and Food and Sciences.

The certificate courses are already being conducted at Mathematics, Persian, Petroleum Technology, Urdu and Mass Communication departments.

According to press release, the faculty of pharmacy has already introduced the programme. The classes will start form Jan 8, and the duration of classes is scheduled between 03:30 pm to 06:30 pm.
