Date for next CSS exams still undecided

ISLAMABAD, Jan 8: The Establishment Division is in a state of indecision to set a date for the start of the next written examinations for Central Superior Service (CSS) candidates.

The Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) has sought dates from the Establishment Division to conduct the annual examinations to choose officers for Grade 17 from amongst the candidates, an official told The News.

Establishment Secretary Tariq Ali Bokhari and Additional Secretary Sheikh Nasirul Haq did not bother to return the phone calls of this correspondent, which were made to know the reason as to why the Establishment Division is sitting over the FPSC request for fixing a date for examination.

The official said the FPSC was not so independent that it could decide about the date for the written tests on its own.

With the confusion prevailing about the start of the examination, thousands of candidates, who are preparing for the test for months, gripped by uncertainty.

"First, we heard the examination will be conducted in March 2007. Now, we have known that the test has been delayed but no date has been fixed," Uzma Hameed, one of the candidates, told this correspondent.

The FPSC official said the written papers were unlikely in March. He was unsure whether the examination would be held in April and said it could be even delayed as all depends on the date to be fixed by the Establishment Division. He said that the FPSC would also need some time to prepare the logistics for the countrywide operation, in which a huge number of candidates take part.

Former FPSC chairman Lt Gen (Retd) Jamshaid Gulzar Kiyani, who was unceremoniously shown the door, had worked hard to minimize the period between the conduct of examination, announcement of results and holding of viva from the maximum of 13-18 months. He had endeavoured to ensure that all the activities related to the annual examination-its conduct, declaration of results, viva and allocation of occupational groups to the successful candidates-should come to a close in the same year to save a lot of time of the contenders.

The official said that the last CSS written examination was held in May-June 2006. The oral test has been considerably delayed for reasons best known to the FPSC with the successful candidates being irked constantly. "The viva is now underway," the official said.
