Karachi Grammar School sweeps schools Olympiad

KARACHI, 15 Jan(Daily Times): The Karachi Grammar School (KGS) and the School of International Studies in Sciences and Arts (SISA) walked away with the highest number of awards at the eighth International Educational Olympiad. KGS managed to bag four trophies, while the Lahore-based SISA students attained the highest number of medals.

The students competed in the following categories: art, bridge, chess, cyber fair, classical dance, elocution, maths and science quiz, group discussion, vocals, filmmaking, photography, theatre, teacher's quiz and the grand quiz. The winners were announced at the Olympiad's closing ceremony on Sunday at the premises of the Karachi High School, that holds this event annually in collaboration with several sponsors. Punjab's Education Minister Mian Imran Masood was the chief guest and had flown in especially for the event.

Three awards for outstanding achievements were also handed out-one to Ubaidullah Baig, another for Iftikhar Arif and the last for Qureshpur. Only Baig made it to the final programme while his two contemporaries failed to make it for one reason or another.

The KGS students took top honours in the filmmaking, chess, group classical dance and vocal senior (pop) categories. They were closely followed by Lahore's Aitchison College, which managed three trophies in the bridge, group discussion and cyber fair categories.

Lahore-based SISA won the highest number of medals. The students took home six medals plus two honourable and special mentions by the judges for their performances.

Froebels International did well also by bagging three gold medals-one for group discussions, another for the quiz and the third one for classical dance, solo performance. Froebels shared the stage with Aitchison College for the trophy in group discussion.

Other top position holders included Salamat International Campus for Advanced Studies, Lahore, for Theatre, SouthShore School A' Levels for Photography Jr, Ladybird Grammar School for Art Junior, Lahore Grammar School for Maths and Science Quiz, Foundation Public School for Vocals Junior, Cardinal School for Art Middle Section, SouthShore School for Arts Senior, Lahore Grammar School for Vocals, Senior, St. Patrick's High School for Teacher's Quiz, Cardinal School for Elocution.

Quiz Master Michael D'cruize from India thanked the crowd for its support. "I have spoken so many words, and yet I feel sad now that I'm leaving this place-this is because you helped me feel at home during my stay here. Never once, did I feel that I was an outsider here."

Saint Patrick's High School teacher Gervase said the Olympiad was the best thing for the development of the children's brains. "Kids don't need tuitions. They need academic activities such as this competition," he said.

British Council Director Marcus Gilbert said he would like to see a map, "which has Asia in the centre because the future is all about you now. I saw immense talent here but then I also saw a different world when my wife and I visited this school in a slum area of the city," he said.

Punjab's Education Minister drew applause from the Aitchisonions when he said he was an ex-student. "I wasn't expecting this kind of a crowd. So many boys and girls have received awards here that it has simply shocked me," he said.

Masood added that there are 63,000 government schools in the Punjab with 12.8 million students. The dropout ratio is four million because of massive poverty. "These children cannot attend school, not because they do not want to but because they cannot," he said.

"Twenty years ago we only had the Karachi Grammar School and Aitchison College offering higher education. But now Lahore is teeming with schools and colleges, plus Karachi and even Peshawar where new universities are opening up."

"Thank you! Finally someone spoke the truth that we knew all along. It was all the more impressive because SISA was an institution that was just 5 months old. And to perform so well, WOW! ISEO 2007 was a glimpse of all the great acheivements to come from SISA."
