HEC publishing 10 monographs and textbooks
ISLAMABAD, Jan 8: Seven new monographs and three textbooks being
published under the Higher Education Commission's (HEC) 'Monographs and Textbook
Writing Scheme' will be available in the market by end of the current month.
The scheme is expected to fill the shortage of textual and support
material, in addition to encouraging academics to become quality writers and
creating a strong cadre of academic authors, said the commission's press
release. Four of the monographs' titles pertain to biological sciences.
Dr Farkhanda Manzoor's book 'Morphometric Studies on Termite Genus
Odontotermes' is the first thorough study of morphometric variation of 52
species of the genus Odontotermes from Bangladesh, Burma, China, India,
Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore and Sri Lanka.
Dr

Alleopathy is a chemical mechanism of plant interference and is characterised by
a reduction in plant emergence or growth.
'Viruses, Bacteria, Fungi,
Algae, Lichens' by Nisar Ahmad covers five main disciplines of botany that are
important to humans in many ways. Dr Muhammad Ibrar Shinwari, Dr Maryam Ibrar
Shinwari and Dr Muqarrab Shah have worked together on 'Medicinal Plants of
Margalla Hills National Park, Islamabad'. It provides an overview of this
emerging discipline and will prove helpful for postgraduate students,
researchers, phyto-chemists, environmentalists, park managers and planners on
how to focus on an area for exploration of medicinal wealth.
In the
discipline of marine sciences, Dr Makhdoom Hussain and Shabbir Ali Mir have
penned 'Fishing Crafts and Gears in Operation along the Coast of Pakistan'. It
presents a useful and comprehensive account of current know-how about fishing
nets and crafts operated by local fishermen along the coast of Sindh and
Balochistan. In social science, Dr Syed Tahir Ijaz's 'Employees Performance
Evaluation-A Managerial Approach' has focused on the developing world, where
performance evaluation is often regarded as extra work with no significant
return to the organisation.
'Violence, Terrorism and Teachings of Islam'
by Dr Muhammad Imtiaz Zafar is another topic likely to attract readers'
attention. This study uses commentaries of the holy Quran from Ibn Abbas of
first century to Sayyid Quttab of fourteenth century hijra and sayings of the
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to glean meanings of ayah al –Irhab and to analyse it in
the context of the contemporary understanding of terrorism. The study concludes
that Islam does not teach or encourage hatred, violence or
terrorism.
'Sindhi Nasar je kin Sinfen jo Ibhayas' by Parveen Moosa is
concerned with the history of Sindhi literature, and presents a critical and
deep analysis of the genres of Sindhi prose such as literary essays, research
articles, novels, travelogues, short stories and dramas in simple and literary
style.
Dr Muhammad Salim has written 'Basics of Pain Medicine'. The
salient feature of this book is an in-depth description of the management
protocols of common pain syndromes.

'Histology: Functional and Clinical'. The book aims at making the study of
histology more meaningful for future clinicians by providing a perspective on
