Research on the rise at universities
ISLAMABAD, Jan 8(Daily Times): The stress on research in universities by the Higher Education
Commission (HEC) has started to pay off as research publications in
internationally subscribed (IS) indexed journals have increased from 788 in 2002
to 1,636 articles and research and development (R&D) organisations in
2006.
The Quaid-i-Azam University leads the group with 312 publications,
followed by the University of Karachi with 226, out of which 149 publications
are by the HEJ Institute of Chemistry and the remaining 77 are from the
department of botany. Agha Khan University, Karachi is in third place with 189,
the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad has 137, while the University of
Punjab is in fifth place with 94 publications.
Engineering universities
are lagging behind in research as the NED University of Engineering and
Technology, Karachi has produced no publications in 2006 while the National
University of Science and Technology (NUST) has only published 21 articles. The
University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore has 17 publications while
UET Taxila only has 3.
According to the HEC the situation is improving
as new equipment, research grants and free access to instruments are available
to researchers, and an increasing number of PhDs and foreign faculty are
promoting a rapidly growing research culture in universities.
