HEC funds new solar water heating system
ISLAMABAD, Jan 12(NNI): The Higher Education Commission (HEC) is funding a
project to develop a solar hybrid water heating system for industrial processes
under its University-Industry Technology Support Programme.
Ahmad Sohail,
the assistant professor of the National University of Science and Technology
(NUST) Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EME) College, will conduct the
research in collaboration with Sheikh Muhammad Zubair of Mechanical Industries,
Lahore. HEC will bear 80 percent of the research cost while Mechanical
Industries will pay the remaining 20 percent.
The project's aim is to
develop a process for pre-heating industrial water that will feed a boiler run
with natural gas for maintaining the temperature and sustain industrial
processes.
Mechanical Industries is an expert in manufacturing heat
exchangers, boilers, and pre-heating water equipment, and will also provide the
necessary components. The prototype unit will have a payback period of 4-6
years, depending on the system design and the availability of high quality
components at affordable prices. Unlike most energy sources, solar radiation is
available in abundance and is the most promising future source of energy. Solar
water heating systems can only be used where the available fraction of solar
energy matches the load. Fortunately it matches in commercial and industrial
applications, but cannot be used domestically.
The research will address
those industrial sectors where there is a large consumption of oil or natural
gas. This demonstration unit will make use of evacuated tube technology while
the heat transfer to storage tanks will be done through coil type heat
exchangers.
