Punjab Technical Edu, DCom answer sheets gone missing

Lost and (not) found: 983 DCom papers missing
Lahore, July 19, 2008: The future of 983 students of diploma in commerce (DCom) is at stake, as the bundle carrying their answer sheets have gone missing during its transportation from Lahore to Vehari by the Punjab Board of Technical Education (PBTE) officials, it was learnt on Friday.

PBTE Controller Asad Butt said that the bundle was lost during while it was being taken to the checkers, and that the board was holding an inquiry on the issue. He said that students would be compensated for the loss with marks in accordance with their result percentage in others papers.

One of us: A PBTE official said that the board administration had made efforts to find the missing papers, but in vain. He said that the board's Secrecy Branch was responsible for the loss. He said that it was not for the first time that answer sheets were 'misplaced'. However, he said that the officials had failed to recover the papers this time. He said that the board officials were facing problems in compiling results, and were under pressure as the board had decided to announce the result in August. Another PBTE official said that someone within the board must have misplaced the papers because no outsider was allowed to enter the PBTE's Secrecy Branch.

No delay: Asad Butt said that the board had dispatched the papers for checking, and had put the bundle on a bus at the Nawan Kot bus station. He claimed that when the board officials reached Thokar Niaz Baig, they discovered that the bundle was not there. He said that the officials had tried their best to find the papers, but failed. He said that the answer sheets were of different subjects of DCom, and that enquiry on the issue was still underway. "Such mishaps are not unusual. We have a lot of pressure on us as we have checked 349,000 papers of 47,000 students," he said. However, he said that result would not be delayed. "We were going to announce the result on August 25, but now it will be declared on August 8."

Board's law on missing papers: Asad Butt said that according to the law, all affected students would be given marks in accordance with their result percentage, but if a student was not satisfied with the result, he/she could reappear in the examination without paying the examination fee. He said that no one could use the missing answer sheets for his/her benefit, as the papers were from across the province. "It is difficult to identify the papers," he added.

A number of DCom students, enrolled in various institutions, said that the news of lost answer sheets had increased their tension.

Kamran Khan from Raiwind Technical College said that the incident had exposed the the technical board. He said that students from his college had contacted the board officials to find what the board had done for them, but they did not get a satisfactory reply.

Sadia Sheikh from the Jain Mandir Poly Technical College said that DCom students applied for admission to bachelors in commerce (BCom) or bachelors in finance disciplines on the basis of their result. "All the institutions have announced their schedule of admission, and now we are worried about our result." Daily Times
