HEC foreign universities scholarship programme
HEC scholarship giving chances for abroad studies
Islamabad, July 09: The scholarship programme of Higher Education Commission is
benefiting people across the country and as a result the students from the
lower-middle class and from far-flung areas get chance to study in the top class
universities of the world.
The commission has started the programme in terms
of local and foreign scholarship schemes for the students and for faculty
members of different universities as well. Presently 2,500 scholars have been
studying abroad in different countries of the world including America, England,
Germany, Austria and France.
The programme has many success stories like
Muhammad Tahir. Born on September 8, 1978, to parents of humble origins in a
small farming family of a far-flung village, Muhammad Tahir spent his early
education years in his native village of 'Shehr Sultan' - a remote, inaccessible
village in Jatoi tehsil of Muzaffargarh District of in Southern Punjab.
After achieving first division in his matriculation in his village school,
Tahir went on to attend the Government Degree College in Alipur, which required
a total daily commute of 46 kilometers from his home and back. Despite this
distance, and the subsequent tight schedule, he completed his B.Sc in 1999,
ranking first in the college and winning a scholarship for higher studies.
Tahir decided to further enhance his credentials by completing M.Phil
degree in physics at QAU in 2004, under the guidance and supervision of Dr
Kashif Sabeeh, who was instrumental in providing Tahir motivation to achieve new
educational heights. A paper from the thesis was published in The American
Physical Society journal, one of the most influential periodicals in the world,
and noted for its highly respected authorship.
Tahir was then offered a
position as lecturer at the University of Sargodha, and after observing his
aptitude and interest in physics, it was suggested by then vice-chancellor that
he should compete for higher studies and apply to the Higher Education
Commission's Foreign Ph.D. programme.
He chose Imperial College, London, as
his destination. Having been accepted, the HEC awarded him a scholarship under
the "10pc Overseas Scholarships" scheme, and Tahir began his studies at Imperial
College, London, in 2006, under the supervision of Prof. Angus Mackinnon.
During his year and a half stay, and under Prof. Mackinnon's guidance,
Tahir went on to publish additional seven articles, all in the American Physical
Society. This is a prime example of how, with continued support, guidance and
perseverance, one can achieve the near impossible. The Nation

I want to get education thats why i got adminssion in BBA at Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur.Before getting admission here I do part time job in Larkana city at flour mill and Computer shop and I would maintain the fees and expenses. I got admission here from my saved money. I was selected by pur merit base for admission. 851 students were appeared in enty test, the total seets were 80 only. Now first semeseter in about to complete and I have to give fees again. But I do not have to submit and give fees and afford the degree expenses. Also my house is running from many financial problems. We are 10 family members in the house and my father has died. Only two brothers are doing private job. they are educated up to Bsc but they dont have government job. The total income of our parents is about 15000/- per month, Also we are linving in the rental house in Larkana city. My expenses of BBA degree are about 20000/- twenty thousands or more than it per 6Months. I request you to support me, arrange me the said money and give me fianancial aid. HEC anti-smoking lectures campaign
Lahore: The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) has not held a single anti-smoking lecture, despite
its announcement to have anti-smoking lectures in the institutions of the city.
HEC Learning Innovation Director General Noor Amina said that they had
nominated institutions of the city for the lectures and they would launch their
campaign soon. She also said that the political situation of the country was one
of the reasons for the delay.
The officials of various universities' on
the other hand, said that they did not know about the HEC's anti-smoking
lectures, as HEC had not sent them a letter in this regard.
The HEC in
collaboration with the World Health Organisation and the Health Department had
started an anti-smoking campaign and had conducted a series of lectures in 16
public and private institutions of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The HEC officials
had announced two months ago, that they would launch a campaign against smoking
in the educational institutions of Punjab as well, starting from the first week
of June but they had not started any programme as yet.
Noor Amina said
last month that they would start the campaign from the private institutions of
Lahore, as the students of these institutions were more prone to smoking.
According to the HEC plan, they wanted to conduct anti smoking lectures in the
National College of Arts (NCA), Beaconhouse National University (BNU), Lahore
University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Fast-National University of Computer
and Emerging Sciences (Fast-NUCES), Government College University (GCU),
Kinnaird College (KC), Forman Christian College University (FCCU), Lahore
College for Women University (LCWU) and the Punjab University (PU).
Campaign: Noor Amina said on Tuesday, that they would start
a campaign in Lahore in a few days, as they had held a meeting with the federal
health minister in this connection, and discussed the campaign's strategy. She
said that the city's universities had not nominated their names as yet for the
lectures about the hazards of smoking. She added that they wanted to launch a
similar campaign in Peshawar, but due to the political situation of the country
they were also facing problems in that city.
An HEC official said that
the universities would be told to implement the Prohibition of Smoking and
Protection of Non Smokers Health Ordinance 2002, which would declare all
educational institutions non-smoking zones. He said that the HEC was concerned
about the increasing habit of smoking and taking drugs among students. He said
that although smoking was banned in the institutions of the city, the
administrations had failed to stop students from smoking. He added that the
campaign was meant to educate the teachers, students and the private and public
universities' administrations across Pakistan about the hazards of smoking.
Letter: BNU Communication Adviser Arfa Sarfraz said that it was not in
her knowledge that the HEC had sent any letter to them and that she did not know
that they wanted to conduct anti-smoking lectures in BNU.
LCWU
Communication Adviser Anjum Zia said that she also had not received any HEC
notification that it wanted to conduct a lecture about smoking in the
university. She said that LCWU was a non-smoking zone, as they had not received
a single smoking case in the varsity.
PU Spokesman Dr Mujahid Mansori
said that he did not know that the HEC had sent a letter to the PU regarding an

PhD scholarship scheme by GCID launched
Islamabad: The Glasgow Centre for International Development (GCID) has
launched its scholarships for high-achieving candidates from different countries
in Africa and Asia, including Pakistan, says a press release.
The
scholarship is for students who wish to pursue PhD studies at the University of
Glasgow starting in October 2008.
The PhD proposal must be in one of
GCID's four priority research areas - Health (Human and Animal); Environmental
Management; Education, Lifelong Learning and Global Citizenship and Economic
Development.
Successful candidates will receive a three-year
scholarship, which includes payment of fees at the University of Glasgow and a
monthly stipend for living expenses.

BISE, Rawalpindi Matric result on Aug 1
Rawalpindi: Board of Intermediate and Secondary
Education (BISE) Rawalpindi Chairman Dr. Iftikhar Ahmed Baig has said that
matric result would be announced on August 1 while the intermediate part-II
result would be announced on August 15. He said that after the chemistry, the
process of intermediate examination has been completed. He further said that
results of the exams would be announced as per schedule and there would be no
change in it. Moreover, he said on the day of chemistry's paper, Education Board
Secretary Professor Humayun Iqbal also visited various institutions to check the
