Peshawar SSC exams result announced
Peshawar, July 15, 2008: Girl students outshined boys by clenching the top
seven positions in the Secondary School Certificate examinations conducted by
the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Peshawar.
Nasir Ali,
controller of examinations at BISE, announced the result of SSC (Class 10)
examinations here on Monday.
In the science group, Wajeeha Tauqeer of the
University Model School, Peshawar, took the first position by obtaining 831
marks. The second position went to Sana Yazdani of the Peshawar Model Girls High
School, Warsak Road, who secured 830 marks. Maimoona Nazir of the University
Model School stood third with 828 marks.
In the arts group, Zaiba Said of
the Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Hayatabad, got the first position
with 761 marks.
The second position was also bagged by a student of the
same school, Sadaf Afridi, who secured 740 marks. Mehmoona Afridi of the Qurtaba
Public School, Hayatabad, got the third position with 736 marks.
Mr Ali
said 53,733 students had appeared in the examinations, 36,016 (67.03 per cent)
of whom were declared successful.
BISE chairman Prof Mohammad Tariq Khan
congratulated the top three position holders, who were present on the
occasion.
A total of 49,581 students of both the arts and science groups
appeared in the Class 9 examinations, 24,593 (49.60 per cent) of whom were
declared successful.

Universities face financial crunch in Frontier province
Peshawar: Vice-chancellors of different public sector
universities in the Frontier province met here on Monday to discuss the
financial crisis faced by the varsities.
The meeting which was held here
at the University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, discussed the
financial crisis created due to the slashing of funds released in the fourth
quarter of the year 2007-08 to all the varsities by a two-third. The major chunk
of the recurring expenses, which is about 70 per cent, would go to payment of
salaries, a press release issued here said.
The meeting was attended by
vice-chancellors of the University of Peshawar, NWFP Agricultural University,
Hazara University Mansehra, Gomal University D.I.Khan, Kohat University, Bannu
University of Science and Technology, Malakand University, Frontier Woman
University, Khyber Medical University, and IM Sciences and Islamia College
University.
The meeting noted that the adverse effects of inflation, a 20
per cent raise in pension and salaries and increase in utilities' bills had
struck the universities hard. Moreover, the government varsities were still
bearing the operational cost of various projects which had already been
completed and their PC-IV submitted to the government, the press release
said.

Rallies held over UIT, Quetta admission criteria
Quetta: The Pakhtunkhwa Students Organisation (PSO) and Baloch
Students Organisation (BSO) held separate rallies here on Monday, the former
seeking admission to higher educational institutions on the basis of merit and
the other on quota basis.
Meanwhile, the condition of BSO supporters
Qamar Baloch and Khurshid Baloch, who have been on hunger strike for four days,
deteriorated on Monday but they said they would continue the strike till the
government allowed their admission to the University of Information and
Technology on the basis of quota.
During their procession, the PSO
members raised slogans in favour of the merit system.
Ahmed Jan and Kabir
Afghan said that they would not accept the unjust quota system for admission.
BSO leader Shahzeb Baloch said the government should not play with the lives of
the students on hunger strike. He said that admissions must be made at the
