Abolishing Punjab board Matric fee cost Rs 1.5bn
Punjab Board employees say Lahore Board to suffer loss of Rs 20 million
Lahore, July 31: The abolishment of Matriculation fees will cost Rs 1.5 billion to
educational boards across the province, the Punjab Board Employees
Federation said on Wednesday. Addressing a press conference at
the Lahore Press Club, the federation officials said the government
should shoulder the financial burden to facilitate students instead of
transferring it to the boards. They said the intermediate and secondary education boards could not meet their expenses if examination fees were abolished. They
said fees were a major source of the boards' income. The federation
said if registration fees were abolished, boards would not be able to
operate independently since the government grant was not sufficient to
run the boards. Punjab Boards Employees Federation
representative Aslam Gujjar said they were not against favors being
extended to the students. He said the government should also realise
the problems of the education boards. Gujjar said the government should
provide funds to public sector schools instead of waiving exam fees. Lahore
Board: He said the Lahore Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education
(BISE) would suffer a loss of Rs 20 million due to the decision and it
would be unfortunate if the government took the boards into control. Daily Times
