GCUF facing financial crunch
Faisalabad, July 02: The Government College University Faisalabad has been facing
an acute shortage of faculty coupled with Rs147 million pending liabilities,
Vice-Chancellor Dr Shahid Mehboob Rana said here on Wednesday.
Addressing a press conference at the conference hall, Dr Rana said that
Governor Salmaan Taseer had written to the Higher Education Commission to clear
the university liabilities. Without elaborating the liabilities, he said the
university administration had also been trying to generate revenue through new
programmes and private examination of bachelor and master programmes. He
said the intermediate college of the university had been upgraded to degree
level that would accommodate 800 to 1,000 more students. It would be an
afternoon college that would help the university generate financial resources to
meet its expenses. He said the university had 32 departments in all, of
them 26 had no professors. He said advertisements had been issued for the seats
and recruitments would be made in the next two months. Dr Rana said 22
colleges had submitted applications seeking affiliation with the university. At
the moment, only Government College of Women in Ghulam Mohammadabad is
affiliated with the institution. He said the university would not charge the
colleges affiliation fee in the first phase and all associated colleges could
use the university labs and libraries. Besides, he said the university would
also hire PhD scholars serving at different colleges of the division.
The construction work of new campus will be started by August and the
Higher Education Commission has allocated Rs842 million which will be spent on
raising academic and science blocks, He said the Punjab government had
earmarked Rs548 million last year for five projects. The government allocated
Rs88.7 million for construction and furnishing of a students' hostel at new
campus, Rs145.5 million and Rs150 million for construction and furnishing of
academic block No 1 and 2, and Rs144.8 million for construction and finishing of
intermediate block at the university. However, none of the project was initiated
and funds were lapsed. He said that the university had nearly 700
employees in 2007-08 that now rose to 1500, though we did not initiate any
programme. He said scores of employees were recruited only to please the blue
eyed people. Dawn
