Libraries' role urged to revive book culture
Lahore: Non-availability of journals and books on specific subjects in
towns and small cities is a big issue that needs to be resolved through setting
up more libraries, and reducing paper price and book post expenses, says
booksellers and publishers. In most of the towns and small cities people
don't have an access to books and other stuff for research. A good number of
readers have to consult bookshops in big cities for the purpose and have to face
great hassle in this regard. The booksellers and publishers say the
government and the private sector should join hands for revival of book culture
and ensuring availability of books in towns and small cities. Rana Abdul
Rehman, a publisher and bookseller from Book House, said there should be an
elaborate network of libraries in towns to introduce new publication to the
readers there. However, he regretted that in most of the cases libraries
did not use their funds properly. The purchasing authorities misused the
discount on books and indulged in favoritism and grouping, he deplored. "This is
damaging not only for the readers but also for revival of book culture."
Mr Rehman said the shopkeepers in towns had a limited budget and they
could not afford to have all kinds of books. Only libraries could play a role in
this regard, he added. He said people used to order books by post but
the rising postal expenses had made it unaffordable for them. He suggested
expenses should be reduced on book post so that readers could avoid the hassle
of traveling to big cities. He also suggested paper cost should be
reduced to bring down book prices. "It would also help eradicate illegal
paperback editions," he added. Liaquat Ali from Takhleeqat, a publishing
house, was of the view that in towns there was an immense readership of all
kinds of books, but the booksellers there could not afford to invest in them.
"Booksellers (in small towns) usually keep books of famous writers and poets and
a few others on common topics," he added. He said booksellers in towns
usually write buyers' name in their register and brought them the books they
demand from big cities. Ali also emphasised libraries' role in introducing new
books to readers. Khalid Sharif of Mawara Publishers said in towns the book
business strictly follows the demand and supply principle, adding the
shopkeepers there didn't have space and money to have all kinds of books.
He said there was a need to revive book culture so that the readership
could be increased. "We don't have a big readership in our country, as people
rarely spend on books," he said. Muhammad Khalid from Feroze Sons said
in towns people usually didn't spend on books. Those who wanted to buy books,
mostly on specific topics or research-related material, used book post. The town
shopkeepers usually bought the books from big cities for which people had placed
orders, he added. He also blamed lack of purchasing power for low book buying?
He said only five per cent people afford to buy original books while the
remaining mostly go for paperback editions. Rao Abid from Readings book
outlet said in towns the booksellers had a 'short-term' approach towards books.
"They don't afford to keep all sorts of books and only go for those
books which are in demand – usually written by famous authors," he said, adding
the trend could be changed by improving literacy and through collaboration of
government and the private sector to revive book culture. Dawn
