Hyderabad board announces result of SSC exams
Hyderabad, July 10: Cadet College Petaro as usual has bagged all the three positions among the boys in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) part-II (class-X) annual examination in science group conducted by the Board of Intermediate Secondary and Education, Hyderabad.

The results of Science and General groups were announced by the Board here on Friday.

According to the face sheet of the result of Science group, Abdullah Tahir son of Tahir Abbas secured first position with 805 marks while Mohammad Noman Sharif son of Mohammad Aslam Rana and Syed Maaz Ali Shah son of Syed Wazir Shah shared second position by obtaining 800 marks each. Third position was shared by Shaikh Saad son of Shaikh Farid and Rehan Iqbal Bablani son of Iqbal Ahmed Bablani.

Among the girl candidates, Maheen Shahid daughter of Syed Shahid Ali of Eagle House High School Tando Allahyar bagged first position by obtaining 799 marks, while Syeda Ibadat Jawaid Shah daughter of Syed Jawaid Shah of Saint Mary's Girl High School Hyderabad secured second position and Elsa Imdad daughter of Imdad Hussain of Army Public School Petaro bagged third position by obtaining 787 marks and 782 marks respectively.

A total number of 51,727 students appeared in the examination out of which 45,062 students were declared pass in all the subjects. The result of 251 candidates has been withheld for different reasons. The percentage of successful candidates on a whole is 87.12 per cent.

GENERAL GROUP: In the general group, among the boys candidates, Shahzaib of Maryam Public High School Latifabad-9 Hyderabad, and Mohammad Tariq Ramzan of Government Boys High School Latifabad-7 Hyderabad shared first position by obtaining 674 marks each.

Second position was bagged by Mohammad Yaqoob of Zeeshan Model High School Latifabad-11 Hyderabad by obtaining 670 marks, while Faisal Ali of M.G. Government High School Hala secured third position by obtaining 663 marks.

Among the girl students, Nargis of Government Girls Pilot Secondary School Hirabad Hyderabad obtained first position by securing 665 marks, while Gulnaz of Government Girls High School Tando Mohammad Khan bagged second position by obtaining 658 marks, and third position has gone to Sassui daughter of Naimatullah of Government Girls High School Tandojam (Farm) who has obtained 649 marks.

A total number of 2,787 candidates appeared in the examination out of which 1660 students were declared pass. Dawn

Female literacy in Sindh declines sharply as girls seek to escape 'unfriendly atmosphere'
Karachi: Civil society activists working to promote girls education in Sindh have observed a sharp decline in admissions to colleges, as well as an increase in the drop-out rate due to what students claim is an "unfriendly atmosphere" in public institutions.

Frequent interactions with female students and professors from University of Sindh, lawyers and women rights activists, which have been organised by Sindh Community Foundation (SCF), a youth-led initiative for confidence building and promoting youth education and skills in marginalised communities in the province, revealed that cat-calling, teasing, the objectionable attitude of teachers, and other similar actions are considered to be the primary reasons which compel rural girls to abandon their pursuit of education.

One of these interactions was held recently, where women who had completed their degrees and were associated with different organisations shared their experience with younger women. Rights activists, lawyers, 30 university students and teachers also took active part in the discussion to find a way out how the recently introduced Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill could be made effective to protect girl students in their institutes and women employees at their workplaces, streets, public transport and markets.

According to the observations, parents belonging to traditional backgrounds in Sindh have historically shown a reluctance to send their daughters to pursue higher education or employment. In the recent past, things had gradually become better, but any positive change in parents' attitude declines when they see their daughters depressed. Moreover, this situated is exacerbated when mariage proposals are refused, which in turn, causes a disturbance for the entire family.

Amar Sindhu, a women rights activist, who also teaches Philosophy in University of Sindh, Jamshoro, said that women in rural Sindh are the most oppressed segment of the society. Disrespect for their social status, religion and political affiliation , as well as the fact that they are women translates into being dealt indifferently in their atmosphere. Talking about the significance of the Women Protection Bill against Sexual Harassment, Sindhu said that before this ordinance, sexual harassment was not considered a crime, but now it is declared and women may feel safe anywhere in the society.

Students Sumaira Chandio, Raheela Khaskheli, Asma Jokhio, Nazia Nizamani, Raheela Junejo and others also took part in the discussion. They emphasised the need to take the issue positively to avoid the destruction of the future of those girls who belong to traditionally rigid families. They were convinced that once these girls won the trust of their parents to reach universities and professional institutes, they must take decisions promptly with courage for their better future.

Facilitators of interaction included Advocate Muhammad Essa Bhan, Amar Sindhu, HRCP Sindh Taskforce Coordinator Dr Ashothama Lohano, Shahnaz Sheedi, Shazia Rajpar and Javed Soz. They provided basic information to the girls about the legal aspects of the law, and code of conduct, complain mechanism, and its minor and major punishments. Speakers said that this act protects women rights and considers any back noising to woman, threatening them psychologically, verbal or non verbal, as a crime.

The lawyers said the victim may move an application against any harassment by male colleague to the head of department, and he/she has to take a decision against the alleged person. Furthermore, they said, if a complainant is not satisfied by the action taken against the accused, another application can be moved to the local ombudsmen so the matter can be addressed properly.

During the discussion, they pointed out that male domination is the main reason of this kind of violence, which begins from the family itself. This harassment pushes victim women in depression, and many of them are seen reluctant to join mainstream political, economical and social activism.

Discussing the sensitivity of the traditional society, lawyers suggested that every company and institute should develop a code of conduct for women members and ensure their protection.

Most Sindh MPs hold genuine degrees: KU
Karachi: Most members of the Sindh Assembly hold genuine degrees, in sharp contrast to those of Punjab, University of Karachi (KU) Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr Nasiruddin Ahmed Khan said on Friday.

Khan also expressed satisfaction over the verification process of the MPAs degrees that is nearing completion.

Dr Khan, who is a member of the Degrees Verification Committee, informed that other members of the committee, including Registrar Prof Kaleem Raza Khan and Chairman Department of Computer Science Dr Aquil Burney, had employed very careful methods to make the verification process free of errors and omissions. "We have checked the degrees in an organised way, going through the records and minimising the chances of mistake."

The committee, tasked with the verification of 104 degrees of the MPAs issued by KU, has checked them all and found them to be genuine. The committee members are in the process of finalising the checking procedure in order to make the process flawless.

Dr Aquil Burney pointed out that the oldest degree that they checked was from the year 1952 and the results were not very clear but they did it finally. "We have questioners from the Election Commission that have to be answered and every answer takes two minutes and there are many questions. It is a cumbersome job but we did it with precision and care."

Dr Khan refuted the news appearing in some Urdu newspapers that the degree of Stephen Arif from PS 166 was fake.

"No, it is not. We have checked it and I can say that it is authentic. The case of Yaqub Bizenjo is different. His degree is not a fake one. What he (Bizenjo) did was that he managed to get a degree one month before the KU issued the degrees of that year. It resulted in some discrepancies appearing on the degree. We cannot comment on the case because it is in the court of law," Dr Khan informed.

In the meantime, many senior professors of the KU ridiculed the statements by politicians that were supporting the fake-degree holders and trying to put blame on the media, judiciary and Army. One professor from the Faculty of Science especially mentioned the statement of a member of the Punjab Assembly and said, "He laid the blame of three "Js" - Journalists, Judiciary and Generals. BSEK ready to help CAP body prepare merit list
Karachi: The Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) has offered to provide a software, containing entire data of matriculation examinations, to the provincial office of the directorate-general (Colleges) to facilitate the Centralised Admission Policy (CAP) committee in preparing a merit list of candidates who would be seeking admissions to first year classes in the city's public sector colleges in the ensuing academic session.

According to the BSEK chairman, Syed Anzar Hussin Zaidi, the board that had faced criticism from media and schools after the results of Class IX (Science Group) annual examinations 2009 were delayed had expressed its inability to undertake the task of preparing the merit list on behalf of the CAP Committee for the year 2010.

The results, the chairman added, were delayed merely because of the CAP committee's work carried out by the board in 2009.

The decision had been communicated to the director-general (Colleges) - first in October 2009 and then in April 2010 - but the BSEK did not receive any reply in this regard from the director-general office, he said.

Referring to his recent meeting with director-general (Colleges) Prof Nasir Ansar held in his office which was also attended by BSEK secretary Ms Hur Bano, the BSEK chairman said that the director-general had been apprised of the BSEK difficulties in carrying out the placement work on behalf of the CAP committee because the server of its computer section could not bear extra load.

However, the director-general (Colleges) was assured full cooperation as the BSEK had not only offered him to provide the software containing complete data of matriculation examinations, but also the board's programmers to assist the CAP committee in carrying out the task of placing students in the city's government colleges in accordance with their merit, he said.

He said that the director-general (Colleges) had also been assured that the BSEK would undertake the complete work on behalf of the CAP committee from the next academic session when it would be able to upgrade its computer section with latest server.

Meanwhile, the director-general (Colleges) has nominated the Sindh senior minister's coordinators, Naveed Zuberi and Khalil Qureshi, as observer and coordinator of the CAP committee-2010.

According to a notification issued on Friday, both the observer and the coordinator would attend the meeting of the CAP committee for monitoring of its working. Dawn
