KU sports facilities programme
Karachi, July 26: The University of Karachi (KU) has initiated a programme to
improve the provision of sports facilities available for female students, who
form 70 per cent of the students' body but are provided with no separate
arrangements.
The Vice Chancellor (VC), Prof. Pirzada Qasim revealed the
plan for these new facilities while talking to us in his office on
Wednesday. He said that the university will construct a new building to house
sports facilities which include badminton, table tennis and exercise areas along
with other indoor activities for girls. This will allow girls to play sports in
privacy. He added that the university administration has approved the plan and
construction of the project will begin shortly.
Prof. Qasim said that he
is on the look-out for a former sportsman who will be appointed Sports Director
of the university. The existing gymnasium, which was built in 1962, will be
renovated and a new segregated area for table tennis and basketball will be
created, he said. The gymnasium will have a wooden floor and male students will
be provided with changing rooms after the offices of gymnasium officials have
been relocated. These rooms were originally meant to be changing rooms but were
occupied by the Director of Physical Education and her staff. A new building
will be built to house the offices of the Sports Director and his
staff.
Moreover, he said that the university will ensure that all sports
activities including football, hockey, cricket, squash and tennis are
reintroduced with vigour and that students are allowed to use these facilities.
The VC also said that the university has practically all the indoor and outdoor
sports facilities but students are not making full use of them. "Studies and
sports should go together. A healthy body has a healthy mind. It will allow the
students to use their time judiciously instead of wasting it by indulging in
useless gossip on campus. All the sports facilities remain unused as the hostels
have no students and only some foreign students are seen playing in the grounds.
It is not enough," he stressed.
Prof. Qasim added that the university
will invite schools and colleges of the city to hold sports events in the
university on nominal charges. This will create an environment for physical
activities and the grounds will be used fully. The news
