DCET boys protest accidents
Karachi, June 07, 2008: Dawood College of Engineering
and Technology (DCET) students protested against road accidents which have so
far injured four students on Friday. The student unions of the college blocked a
section of the road in front of their college for two hours and a heavy
contingent of police was summoned.
The college is located at main (new)
M. A. Jinnah Road, opposite Government Islamia College. Jamshed Town Deputy
Nazim Zia Jamal responded immediately after the protest commenced and assured
the students that their demands will be fulfilled shortly.
Punjabi Students Association, DCET unit President Muhammad Nazim
Jutt said that he had written a letter to the city nazim around eight months
ago, demanding the construction of a pedestrian bridge and installation of
cats-eyes in the area.
The deputy nazim assured the students that he
would draft a letter, as assurance, after the Juma prayers, saying cat-eyes will
be installed within two days and a pedestrian bridge will be constructed within
two months, but he never came back.
"If our demands are not addressed,
we will commence the protest tomorrow (Saturday) with a stronger intensity,"
warned Jamal.
According to sources, the DCET administration had also
written a letter to the city nazim on November 30, 2007, requesting the
installation of cat-eyes and the construction of a pedestrian bridge. The
administration had sent a reminded on May 6, 2008, but to no avail. Sources
added that the letter is lying with the Assistant District Officer
Shabib-ul-Jhassan.
Speeding traffic has injured many students in the past
including Faisal Khattak of the Pakhtoon Students Federation, Rahil of Jamiat,

Engg design competition for students
Karachi: To promote automation and robotics in the country, the
Indus Motor Company (IMC) organized an engineering design competition for
students of engineering universities and of the universities invited, teams
represented six, according to an announcement on Friday.
These are the
NED University of Engineering and Technology, G.I.K. Institute of Engineering
and Technology, University of Engineering and Technology Lahore, University of
Engineering and Technology Taxila, NWFP University of Engineering and Technology
and Quaid-e-Awam University of Engineering, Science and Technology.
The
students were asked to apply their designing skills to a real-life manufacturing
problem and come up with a solution. The teams visited the IMC plant to study
the details of the project and subsequently prepare design proposals.
The proposals were evaluated on various criteria, including ergonomics,
economics, design integration, functionality, reliability, degree of automation,
and compatibility of design with process.
The team of students from UET
Lahore, Noman Ahmed, M. Tayyab Hanif and Waqas Saeed won the first prize for the
best-designed proposal.
At the prize distribution ceremony, IMC Director
Corporate Planning and Customer Relations Shah M Saad Husain congratulated the
winning team and mentioned that as an engineering company, the IMC strives to
strengthen the relationship between the industry and academic
institutions.
Husain stated that IMC not only provides internships and
training to engineering and other students, it also employs hundreds of
professionals, offering them opportunities to enhance their skills, pursue
careers, and at the same time, contribute to the engineering industry. App
