New syllabus for IGCSE announced

Karachi, June 18: A new syllabus for the Edexcel Advanced Levels and the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) has been put online and will be available in hard copy format in schools by September 2008, said International Business Manager Edexcel, Dr David Davies. To announce the launch of the new programmes of the IGCSE and the new A' Levels, a presentation for the principles of schools offering University of London based examination was held at a local hotel.

Dr Davies said that the IGCSE are equivalent to the General Certification of Education (GCE) or General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) in their grading and hence equivalent to a local Matriculation qualification. "The difference in the GCE or the GCSE and the IGCSE is that in the grading, the IGCSE offers a grade of A*, which is reserved for the top five to ten per cent of the students and differentiates from the cohort of all those who get an A grade, which is approximately 20 per cent of those who appear in the paper." Dr Davies added that, "On the other end, the IGCSE offers more grades on the lower end going down to grades G, lower than the 'E' offered by the GCE and GCSE."

The syllabus content has also been reduced from six units to four units, except for the subjects of Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Music whose requirement is of six units. The reduction in units also means that the fee of the papers will be less. In addition, there will be only one form of assessment for one unit.

On the operational side of the IGCSE, it offers greater support for both, the institutions and the students in increased interactive media, material and other services to facilitate the preparation process and reduces the overall course work. In addition, schools and even students can order CDs containing programme Exam Wizard which contain specimen papers, questions and their answers.

Dr Davies further revealed that the checking pattern has also undergone major revision with all exam scripts being scanned and each question being sent to the examiner who is best suited to check that question, thus eliminating the examiner, and guaranteeing a more objective checking of papers.

The schedule for the new IGCSE is that in September of 2008, the new syllabus and other material will come in hard copy (currently available online). Their exams will be held in 2010, the new Advanced Subsidiary Level session will commence in 2008, certification in 2009, and A2 session will commence in September 2009 and certification in 2010. O' Levels will be discontinued from 2011, with its last exams being held in the winter of 2010.

A very interesting qualification revealed by Dr Davies was the BTEC. This is a vocational training qualification like that of the Technical boards or the Poly-Technic institutes here. BTEC does not include any term examination but involves a project that spans a couple of weeks.

Dr Davies further revealed that the Inter Board Committee of Chairman (IBCC) too recognises Edexcel and will provide an equivalence of Edexcel results.

It is to be reminded to the public that the IGCSE Edexcel is an offering of the University of London – now owned by the Pearson Group of America and is governed and regulated by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) of the UK. The O' Levels, A' Levels and GCE, GCSE and IGCSE offered by Cambridge remain and continue to be offered. The News
