Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) examination
PPSC exam centre to be built in Johar Town
Lahore, June 30, 2008: The Punjab government
has allocated Rs 26.16 million in the 2008-9 Annual Development Programme (ADP)
to purchase land for the construction of a Punjab Public Service Commission
(PPSC) examination centre in Johar Town.
The offices of the PPSC will
also be shifted to the new building from their present location at Davis Road to
allow applicants to apply and appear in competitive examinations in the same
building, an official said.
The PPSC conducts competitive examinations of
all provincial cadres from BS-11 to 20 for regular and contract employees.
"More than 250,000 candidates appear in examinations every year, costing
millions of rupees to the commission as it has to make arrangements at various
educational institutions," the official said.
The government has
allocated Rs 19.6 million as operating expenditure of the commission for 2008-9,
including Rs 4.35 million as occupancy cost to conduct the
examinations.
There was an urgent need to build an examination centre
with a sitting capacity of 10,000 candidates, the official said, adding that the
Planning and Development Board has already approved PC-I of the project and now
it is part of the ADP.
Currently, he said, 15 members in BS-20 are
working under the supervision of a chairman with a staff of 334 officials.
Some members have opposed shifting the offices from Davis Road to the
new building, but it is premature to comment at the moment, he said, adding that
the old building is owned by the commission. He said the commission had been
working from the Davis Road premises since its inception. The government has
allocated Rs 110.09 million for the commission as non-development budget against
the allocation of Rs 100.58 million for 2007-8. Daily Times

LCWU Girl students protest
Lahore: The majority of students of BFA graphic design 2004-2008 of the
Lahore College for Women University have announced to stage protest on Monday
(tomorrow) outside the Governor's House against the directives of controller
examinations to display their graphic design thesis work again on July 12.
Of
the 16 graphic design students, 12 have refused to again display their thesis as
per direction at the Old Hall of the LCWU. An exhibition of their thesis work
was held at Alhamra Hall from June 7 to June 9, which was inaugurated by Federal
Secretary Athar Tahir. A jury comprising of professionals Raheel Faraz, Ahmer
Rizvi and Sobia Durrani and internal examiners Sharjeel Zafar and Rehan Talat
adjudged the works and gave marks. The jury was appointed by the varsity but
after two weeks the vice chancellor refused to accept the authenticity and
results of the jury and said the students would have to appear before the third
examiner for marking. All faculty members and most of the students are against
the move and are calling for accepting the result prepared by the jury.
"The
vice chancellor has given no reason for re-evaluation of thesis work. It is very
unfortunate and disappointing. The students worked under my supervision. It was
a two-month vigorous exercise by students. We kept a strict check on their work.
They worked hard and produced good results. The jury comprised of good
professionals and there is no reason their evaluation should not be considered.
There is no need to engage a third examiner," Head of Design and Visual Arts
Department Nadra Shahbaz Naeem stated this while talking to The Nation on
Saturday.
She said the students after display of their final thesis usually
do not usually keep it thinking the whole exercise is over. "Each student spends
Rs 30,000 to Rs 60,000 on their thesis preparation, which takes a lot of energy
and time to complete. When the display is in public place like Alhamra there are
chances that the thesis material may have been damaged or stolen. The thesis
work has brochures and other such things that may have been lost. It would be
difficult for students to again display their thesis at such a short
notice.
Internal examiner Sharjeel Zafar was of the similar view saying that
a lot of visitors come to Alhamra and some thesis work like brochures may have
been lost or stolen. "We did the evaluation considering all elements. Students'
attendance and interest in studies was also taken into account. The marking was
fair. It is disappointing not only for students but also for teachers," he
maintained.
The students Anush Ali, Abeera Shafiq, Atiya Khadim, Farah
Batool, Fizza Jabeen, Fatima Qayyum, Nimra Kalim, Quratul Ain, Alvina Malik,
Zahra Rasool, Sania Safdar and Sumbal Rauf worked on different projects for
their final thesis. These were 'Promotion of football in Pakistan', 'Workshop of
typography', 'Young generation and Allama Iqbal', 'IMAX 3D cinema', 'Cartoon
company', 'Revival of heritage', 'Haunted house', 'Opera film festival',
'Deforestation', 'Kara Film Festival', 'Eunuch rights' and 'Tattoo shop'. The
students allege the reason for VC's action was due to the fact that one student
Farwa Butt had failed as she had copied the work of award winning Saudi Arabian
company Dyrup Paints Co. "One student Maryam Ali is daughter of the head of
Gender Studies Department. She also reportedly failed to get very good marks.
Two other students who too may have performed not well joined them and these
four complained to VC for ensuring marking by third examiner.
The rest of the
class suffers due to them. The VC is not giving us one valid reason as to why
third examiner is necessary. She was rude to our parents when they protested
against the move," the students alleged.
They said theirs was the second
batch of BFA passing out from LCWU. "For the first batch the jury was same and
the students are doing MFA in Punjab University. If their was no objection on
the process last year what is the reason for rejecting the jury this time. We
are good students and have nothing to fear but our thesis work is either damaged
or lost. The varsity should provide us the funds and time to complete the thesis
work again," the 12 students said while vowing to continue protest till their
demands were accepted. The Nation
