Punjab University budget for 2008-09

PU syndicate approves Rs 3 billion budget
Lahore, June 28, 2008: The Punjab University syndicate has unanimously approved its Rs 2,975.844 million budget for 2008-09.

According to a press statement issued by the PU on Friday, the current year's deficit of Rs 268.349 million would be met out of Rs 200 million grants committed by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), and through the special savings by the PU during the current fiscal year.

The budget was approved at the syndicate's 1,676th meeting that was presided over by PU Vice-Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran. PU Treasurer Abdul Sattar Jajja presented the budget, which was unanimously approved.

Research: The grant for research has been increased to Rs 50 million from the last year's Rs 22 million that was party funded by the HEC. This year's grant would be given from the PU's own resources.

Overseas scholarships: The amount for overseas scholarships has been doubled from Rs 20 million to Rs 40 million in the 2008-09 budget.

On-campus scholarship: The on-campus PhD scholarship has been increased from 60 to 75 and the special stipend for students during PhD studies has also been increased. The syndicate has announced Rs 4.5 million for the special stipend to PhD students.

The MPhil scholarships have been increased from 25 to 100, and Rs 3 million has been allocated for this.

It was announced that during 2008-09, a total of 5,000 scholarships including 2,500 for needy students and 2,500 merit scholarships would be awarded and each student would be given Rs 12,000. The PU would spend Rs 60 million in this regard.

New CNG buses: The treasurer announced that the PU would buy four new CNG buses with Rs 12 million.

PU dues: Sattar said that despite the increase in prices of electricity, patrol and paper, the university had not increased its tuition fee. However, he said a 15 percent increase in the examination fee was inevitable.

It was also announced that the PU would increase salaries of its employees.

Earlier, members of the meeting prayed for late Justice (r) Sardar Muhammad Iqbal for his services as the syndicate member. Daily Times
