Students protest against RBISE decision

Rawalpindi, June 20, 2008: Hundreds of students protested on Murree Road here on Thursday against the Rawalpindi Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education's decision to re-conduct the Chemistry Part II Paper of the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) Examination.

According to fresh dates, students have to reappear in the Chemistry Part II Paper on Saturday, June 21, at their respective centres at 1:30 p.m.

As many as 4,772 students had earlier appeared in the Chemistry Part II Paper on May 29, but it was cancelled on the grounds that the paper was 'leaked'.

"Somebody faxed the paper to the office of RBISE secretary while it was in progress on May 29," said RBISE Chairman Dr. Iftikhar Beg.

However, the RBISE chairman said that the timing of the fax was not enough to prove that the paper was originally leaked.

Later, a three-member committee was formed, which advised that students should reappear in the paper. "I don't know why this decision was taken, now we have to implement the decision of the government," Dr. Iftikhar said.

Most students said that it was too harsh a decision. "Why they took so long to announce fresh dates of the paper?" questioned Ghayyur Butt, one of the students.

Even the chairman of the RBISE said that he had received complaints from several parents that their children were out of town and it would be extremely difficult to call them back on such a short notice. Students said that they only came to know about the re-examination through tickers on Geo Television, and they were simply shocked to learn that the previous paper would be considered as cancelled.

"We were preparing for our practicals, which would start on June 23. Now all of a sudden we came to know that first we have to reappear in the Chemistry Part II Paper," said Mohammad Asad, another student.

Dr. Iftikhar said that students should reappear in the paper because if they skip it they would not get marks. "We tried our best to inform all affiliated educational institutions and also ran tickers on television channels," Dr. Iftikhar said. The News
