61 Pakistani students to study in US schools
Karachi, Jun 26, 2008: About 61 Pakistani secondary school students, 40 girls and 21 boys have been selected under Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program to study in US schools.

Country Coordinator International Education and Resource Network Pakistan, Farah S Kamal said that this programme is for one year and they will study in advance class of higher education in US schools.

She said that these kids mostly matriculate, while some with O Level were selected from different schools all over Pakistan in 19 cities of Sindh, Balochistan, NWFP, Punjab, FATA and AJK.

The age requirement was 15 to 17 with at least 70 percent marks in every subject. They have passed English language test and interviews before final selection. Applications were invited through advertisements in newspapers, she added.

Farah said they will not get any degree or diploma but get certificates of studying in various subjects of their choice besides learning one foreign language other than English and mother tongue.

She said 57 students majority of them girls were selected last year to study in US schools. They have come back and the 6th batch will leave for USA in the first week of August 2008, she noted.

Some of the students who returned after completing YES programme said it was a best experience and whatever they learned there, will help in their academic career as well as in the practical life.

US Consul General Kay L Anske had hosted a dinner on Tuesday for the selected students who have been in the city since June 23, 2008 in connection for the preparation to attend one year stay in USA.

Speaking on the occasion, she congratulated them on their selection and said they were Pakistani diplomats in USA to share thoughts, ideas and knowledge of Pakistan with US students and people.

"Have a fun, learn as well as teach. USA is a wonderful place where you will meet a large number of people", she added.

Anske said that a Pakistani student of last batch had a privilege to meet US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during the studies. App
