Court issues notice to VC over removal of dept head
Sukkur: The Sindh High Court, Sukkur division bench, on
Saturday issued notices to the vice-chancellor and registrar of the
Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur, to appear before the
court on July 15 and explain the reasons for removing the head of a
department and replacing him with a junior. The bench,
comprising Justice Shahid Anwar Bajwa and Justice Imam Bux Baloch,
issued the notices on a petition filed by Professor Dr Mumtaz Hussain
Mahar. The petitioner, through his counsel, Sarfaraz Akhund
Advocate, had submitted that the vice-chancellor issued an order on
June 15 and removed the petitioner from the post of the chairman of the
department of computer sciences. The petitioner said that after his
removal from the post, system analyst-cum-assistant professor Noor
Ahmed Shaikh was posted as the chairman of the same department, which
is a violation of article 3 (2) of the University Act. The
petitioner maintained that under article 3 (2) of the Act, the dean can
be asked to take the charge of the office of the head of a department
if no other professor or associate professor is available in the
department. He said that in the presence of a professor, an
assistant professor or a lecturer could not be posted as the head of
the department nor its charge could be handed over to the dean of
faculty. Dawn
