HEC ranking hailed abroad
Islamabad, June 07: The ranking exercise by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has received worldwide recognition and the web statistics (of the HEC's website) shows increased interest of academia and other stakeholders in the recent ranking results of the Pakistani universities.

In this connection, the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) has invited HEC officials to share their experiences of academic ranking and benchmarking in Pakistan at the executive forum of the academic leadership of all Commonwealth countries, to be held from November 9-11 in Jamaica. The theme of the conference is "University ranking and benchmarking." More than 150 vice chancellors representing higher education institutions from the Commonwealth countries would attend the conference. As many as 35 representatives of member institutions from Pakistan would also attend the moot. The ACU is an international inter-university network operating internationally with its academia members to promote and contribute to the provision of excellent higher education for the benefit of societies throughout the Commonwealth countries. The focus on Pakistani rankings by the ACU further ratifies the credibility and accuracy of ranking experience of Pakistan as one of the good practices at international level.

The encouraging contemplation and appreciation of international academic community in Pakistani ranking exercise reflects on confirmation of a noticeable paradigm shift in qualitative growth of higher education sector of the country. HEC invited to Jamaica moot by ACU

Lecture on sexual harassment, related laws
Islamabad: A panel of experts on Wednesday educated the Shifa College of Nursing's staff and students about the basics of sexual harassment and its definition. Once the audience was clear about it, the issue of sexual harassment and the stigma attached to it was highlighted for the benefit of the participants.

The Shifa College of Nursing had organised a session regarding sexual harassment and the laws dealing with it. The experts included Shifa International Hospital Director Babar Awan, Quaid-e-Azam Hospital Assistant Director Jacoline Omar and Mehergarh (a centre for learning) Programme Director Maliha Husain. The panel also took questions from the students. They explained what the anti-sexual harassment legislation was all about. Academy of Letters promoting literary culture
Islamabad: Academy of Letters Chairman Abdul Hameed said that he was working for the welfare of poets and writers, and for the promotion of literary culture in the country.

Talking to renowned writer and poet Safdar Shahid who called on him here, he said that under a comprehensive programme, young writers and poets would be brought into mainstream.

Safdar Shahid, who is Chairman of Literary Organisation 'Dhandara', invited Abdul Hameed to attend a reception to be held in his honour at Talagang. Chief Organiser of Dhandara, Shafqat Fayyaz Malik was also present.

World Environment Day observed at FJWU
Rawalpindi: The Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) observed World Environment Day on Tuesday to stimulate awareness regarding environment protection.

The Department of Environment Sciences, in collaboration with the Department of Fine Arts, organised different activities on the campus to mark the occasion.

Dean Faculty of Law, Commerce and Management Sciences Professor Dr. Naheed Zia Khan, heads of departments and the controller examinations were present on the occasion. Fatima Jinnah Women University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Samina A. Qadir was the chief guest on the occasion. The students exhibited posters and models to highlight different environmental problems.

FJWU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Samina A. Qadir distributed prizes among award-winning students of poster and model competitions. She congratulated the two departments for organising the event.

Speech contest
Islamabad: A joint humorous speech contest of the ITC and ICMAP Toastmasters Club took place at the ICMAP club, says a press release.

A large number of Toastmasters and guests attended the function. Toastmaster Sajjad Ahmed DTM and Toastmaster Mian Muhammad Ramzan ACB, CL, respective presidents of the two clubs jointly presided over the meeting.

The third prize was won by Toastmaster Usman Gulzari, the second prize was bagged by toastmaster Muhammad Imran and the championship shield was won by Akbar Jan Marwat DTM.

Toastmaster Jawed Iqbal CC,CL acted as the contest chair, while founding president of the Toastmasters Club Maliha Elahi CC,CL acted as the chief judge, who also distributed the prizes.

AIOU Faculty of Sciences Board meeting
Islamabad: The 14th Faculty of Sciences Board meeting of the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) will be held from June 12 to 14 at the AIOU Council Hall.

AIOU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Nazir Ahmed Sangi will preside over the opening session on June 12 at 9 a.m., while Faculty of Sciences Dean Professor Dr. Noshad Khan will chair all remaining sessions.

Matters and agenda items of the departments relating to academic programmes in BS, MS and PhD in new disciplines will be discussed in various sessions.

Besides all faculty members, relevant subject experts from all over the country will participate in the meeting. The concluding session of the meeting would be held on June 14. The news
