Islamabad: The Convocation 2013 of the Foundation University Medical College (FUMC) was held here on Tuesday.

Foundation University Islamabad (FUI) President Lieutenant General (r) Muhammad Mustafa Khan, who is also managing director of the Fauji Foundation, was the chief guest. FUI Rector Major General (r) Gul Muhammad was also present on the occasion.

As many as 107 MBBS graduates were awarded degrees by the FUI president. The chief guest also awarded 6 gold medals, 5 silver medals, 15 distinction certificates and 62 merit certificates. The award for best graduating student was clinched by Zaid Waqar.

In his welcome address, Foundation University Medical College Principal Major General (r) Dr. Nasim-ul-Majeed presented the annual college report, highlighting the progress and academic excellence it has achieved last year.

Lieutenant General (r) Muhammad Mustafa Khan said that the FUMC stands out as a prominent institution among the medical colleges of the country. "Several hundred graduates from the FUMC are in the mainstream of medical profession not only within Pakistan, but also in other countries. The purpose-built campus of the college with elaborate teaching facilities is considered as a model for contemporary institutions. Its close proximity with state-of-the-art teaching hospital is a great advantage, which provides an environment, conducive for learning and greatly facilitates the academic pursuit of the students," he added.

The president informed the audience that Foundation University is now an ISO certified institution and has been upgraded by the Higher Education Commission to 'W-4', which is the highest category. FUMC was the pioneer college in the private sector to achieve approval of the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council for 150 admissions in MBBS programme.

He said, construction of the new block to house the dental college is progressing as per schedule and it is expected that BDS programme shall be launched in January 2014. FUI president said that no academic programme can succeed without the diligence and commitment of faculty. FUMC is privileged to have qualified and dedicated faculty whose guidance has played a key role in achieving the high academic standards.

He advised the new graduates that they must not consider this success as the accomplishment of their goal. "This achievement of yours today only marks beginning of a long and continued endeavour to learn and absorb the new modalities of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. You are entering into the medical profession at a time when the pace of research and development in health sciences is tremendous. New discoveries are being made every day. It is really a challenge to keep oneself current with the changing scenario", he stressed.

In the end, FUI Rector Major General (R) Gul Muhammad presented a shield to the FUI president. The news
