National University of Modern Languages without girls hostel

ISLAMABAD, June 8(The Nation): - National University of Modern Languages (NUML) has no girls hostel whereas boys' hostels for Pakistani students are hub of problems and lack all basic facilities as compared to the foreign students' hostel.

Though it is a national university but don't have any hostel for girls. There are only three hostels for boys and one of them is for foreigners and two are for local students who have come from different parts of the country including Balochistan, Sindh, FATA and Punjab.

A student complained while requesting not to be named that hostel number 2, which is for foreign students, is well furnished, air-conditioned and its food quality is also good. But hostel number 1, which is for local students, is very sub standard and in poor condition. "There are no attached wash rooms and the rooms are very small as three students have been accommodated in a single."

Theft incidents are increasing day by day in the hostels and students are said to compensate the victim collectively, alleged the students. Once a computer of a student was gone missing, they divided the cost of the computer, Rs 20,000, amongst the students.

"Two Chinese students living in hostel no 1 deprived of their laptop, two digital cameras and one I-pod.

Administration pressurized the native students to pay the Chinese students collectively. But on the refusal of the students it could not happen and they went back to China without compensation."

Students don't have the facility of Internet and cafeteria in the hostel. After 6:30pm when university is closed they cannot purchase anything if they want to eat or drink something.

No full time warden has been hired to manage the hostels but teachers who teach in the morning and live in the hostels look after the hostels' matters which multiply the problems of the students. "We collect the money and purchase kitchen items. University administration has only provided space and staff," students informed.

Director Administration at NUML Yaseen while talking to us said the students are themselves involved in these thefts, no one comes from outside to do this.

"We are providing our best services according to the amount students pay. Internet service is not available in the hostels because students misuse it."

Yaseen said foreigners get extra ordinary facilities because government of Pakistan bear all the expenditure while local students pay themselves. Foreigners are mostly Chinese army officers. He also informed about the women hostel at the university which is going to be completed soon and will be started in the month of August and will have the capacity to accommodate 96 female students.
