HEC Cuban scholarships: UoP VC's selection

600 medical students off to Cuba
Islamabad, March 20, 2008: An orientation session for the students leaving for medical education in Cuba was organised at Higher Education Commission (HEC), Islamabad in collaboration with the Cuban Embassy.

Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba Gustavo Machin Gomez and HEC Chairman Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman were chief guest and guest of honour respectively on the occasion.

The purpose of the event was to inform the students about different aspects of the scholarship programme, the educational system in Cuba and matters related to living and managing in a foreign environment. Similar orientation sessions had also been organised by HEC at Karachi and Lahore. Cuban Embassy First Secretary Ariel Lorenzo was present at all the three occasions.

Speaking on the occasion, the Cuban ambassador said that 1000 medical scholarships for Pakistani students by Cuban government is a commitment of Cuban people towards their Pakistani friends.

Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman commended the Cuban government for offering medical scholarships to Pakistani students and stated that the Cuban government through this programme has committed on a long-term relationship between the two friendly countries.

'UoP VC's selection process non-transparent'
Peshawar: The Peshawar University Teachers Association (PUTA) on Wednesday expressed reservation about the selection procedure of University of Peshawar (UoP) Vice Chancellor (VC), saying that the procedure was non-transparent and partisan, a PUTA press release said on Wednesday.

The press release said that the NWFP government had advertised the posts of Malakand University and UoP VCs and invited applications from eligible candidates. A search committee was constituted to scrutinise the applications for the posts of VCs, it said, adding that the committee interviewed, short-listed and recommended the candidates to the chancellor for the appointments. However, the composition of the search committee was changed after the appointment of the new governor, who is also the chancellor of both the universities, the press release said.

The PUTA press release said that the reappointment of Imtiaz Hussain as the University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar VC was in violation of the rules. The PUTA expressed their concern over ignoring Professor Dr M Javed Khan, who is the UoP acting VC, and who was not invited for the interview, the press release said, adding that the whole procedure of appointment of VCs became non-transparent and partisan when a candidate was ignored without any valid reason.

Students protest sketches
