PU contributing to research and development: governor
Lahore, March 26, 2008: Governor Lt-Gen (r) Khalid
Maqbool said that the Punjab University (PU) is continuously contributing to
research and development.
According to a press release issued by PU on
Tuesday, while speaking at the launching ceremony of the four-day Bio-Forum 2008
organised by the PU Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB), he said
that the industrialists must look at the steps taken by the varsities for the
country's development.
Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran,
former PU VC Khairat Ibn-e-Risa, CEMB Director Dr Sheikh Riaz-ud-Din, Dr Sajida
and over 232 biologists, researchers and industrialists from across the country
were present on the occasion. The governor said, "We must realise that we are
living in an age of industrial competition and we will only succeed if we are
able to produce low cost, standardised products". He said that in order to
achieve development in the field of biotechnology, a crop of trained manpower
was needed and there should be control over the quality and price of new
products.
He said that the forensic lab and DNA sequencing facilities
available at the PU CEMB is accessible to the entire country. He said that these
labs and other departments of the university must generate income through
commercialisation and start practical programmes.
The VC said that the
university had been the first in every new initiative taken in scientific
education and research. He also said that PU was the first university that had
established a definitive programme for molecular biology teaching and
research.
CEMB Director Dr Riaz-ud-Din gave a comprehensive briefing
about the Bio-Forum and said that they had received several applications for
participation. Later, he gave a presentation on how to develop the

PU syndicate approves various appointments
Lahore: The 1675th meeting of Punjab University Syndicate held with
Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran in the chair at New Campus on Tuesday.
The meeting approved appointments of heads of various departments, institutes
and colleges for three-year period.
The Syndicate
discussed the appointment of administrative officers in various offices of the
varsity and other matters on the agenda.
The syndicate
approved the recommendations of the Selection Board and the appointments of
three new members of Advance Studies and Research Board (AS&RB).
These members
included Prof Dr Najma Najam, Khawaja Haris Muhammad Rashid and Prof Dr Naseer
Ahmad.

Economics Department, Syed Zia Ullah Shah (lecturer cadre), Dr Mira Philbus
former Principal of Kinnaird College for Women, Education Department Additional
Secretary (Academic) Maqsood Mumtaz, Finance Department Additional Secretary
(Finance) Humayun Mazhar Sheikh and Shahzad Alam attended the
