UHS VC extension: GCU Urdu moot
LHC calls report on UHS VC service extension
Lahore, March 07, 2008: The Lahore High Court (LHC), on
a petition challenging the extension given to Professor Dr Malik Hussain
Mubashar as the vice chancellor of the University of Health Sciences (UHS), has
called a report from the principal secretary to the Punjab governor within three
weeks.
The LHC has also directed the principal secretary to report how
many vice chancellors (VCs) were holding their offices after the period of their
service had been lapsed.
The court issued these directions on a petition
by Dr Ilyas Ahmad Arshad Faridi, an assistant professor of the Institute of
Health Sciences.
The petitioner said that Dr Mubashar was appointed as
the vice chancellor for four years, but he was still holding the office despite
his period of service having elapsed since April 2007.
He said according
to the UHS Ordinance 2002, the term of vice chancellor was for four years. He
said no one should be allowed to bypass the law merely because one was a
hardworking officer. He said the governor, who was a UHS chancellor, was not
authorised to grant an extension to the vice chancellor.
He also
requested that Professor Dr Mubashar should be questioned under what authority
he was holding the office of the vice chancellor.
