1,288 degrees awarded at Hamdard University convocation
Karachi, Mar 02: Hamdard University awarded 1,288 degrees and diplomas to its students at its
13th Convocation on Saturday. The portrait of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah
served as the chief guest on the proposal of Chancellor Senator S.M
Zafar. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul
Ebad Khan and Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah were expected to attend the
convocation but the stormy political scenario in the country prevented them from
turning up at the event. It was their absence that put the novel idea of using
Jinnah's portrait as the chief guest into practice. The university also
awarded five PhD and 12 M.Phil degrees and 38 university and Shaheed Hakim
Muhammad Saieed gold medals. Consul General of Saudi Arabia Dr Hasan A. Attar
was presented an honourary Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) degree.
448 degrees awarded at PAF-KIET convocation
As many as 448 graduates were conferred degrees on Saturday at the sixth convocation ceremony of the Pakistan Air Force
- Karachi Institute of Economics & Technology (PAF-KIET). The degrees were
awarded in the disciplines of business administration, computer science and
engineering. Around 332 degrees were also awarded to students of the
College of Management Sciences, including 85 degrees in BBA, 242 in MBA and five
in MS (Management Sciences). Of the remaining degrees, 56 were awarded for the
College of Computing and Information Sciences including 25 in BS, 27 in MCS and
MBA-MIS, and four in MS areas. The remaining 60 degrees were awarded to the
Engineering students, including 56 to BE Electronics students and four to the
MS-Telecom students. Former Sindh governor Air Marshal (retd) Azim
Daudpota was the chief guest. PAF-KIET Chancellor Prof. Dr Izhar-Ul-Hasan
praised the efforts of the students and emphasized the role of education in
enhancing knowledge. Approximately 375 attended the convocation and the
remaining students were awarded degrees in absentia.
210 dentists, doctors get degrees
Some 210 students of the Fatima Jinnah Medical and Dental College were awarded graduate degrees at the annual convocation on Saturday.
University of Karachi (KU) Vice-Chancellor Peerzada Qasim distributed degrees
among the budding dentists and doctors. Some 138 students were awarded
MBBS degrees and 78 were awarded BDS degrees. Nineteen students achieved
positions while 190 students achieved distinction marks.

189 graduates awarded degree at Isra varsity convocation
Hyderabad: Prof Dr. Ghulam Qadir Kazi, Chancellor of Isra University, presided
over the sixth convocation ceremony here on Saturday, in which 189 graduates
were awarded degrees. Out of these 189 graduates, 96 were awarded MBBS
degrees, 14 in nursing, 9 for post graduation in MS (E.N.T), MS (General
Surgery), MS (Obs & Gyane), MS (Ophthalmology), MD (Internal Medicine) and
MDS (Operative Dentistry) in clinical sciences, 38 for bachelors and 30 for the
masters in business administration, information technology, telecommunications
and computer science, whereas two for post graduation degree in management
sciences (M.Phil). Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Asadullah
Kazi, in his welcome address said that the holding of convocations falls with in
the purview of academic traditions of a university. He said that the
main purpose of such celebrations is to confer degrees on students who have
successfully completed their studies, and at the same time those who have
performed meritoriously are decorated with gold and silver medals. Dr
Kazi said that the number of students enrolled during this short history of the
Isra University had increased from 28 in October 1997 to 1,396 in November 2008.
He said fifty-two per cent of the students were enrolled for the medical
sciences, while the remaining forty-eight per cent for computer and management
sciences. He further said that the total number of students enrolled
since the university opened in 1997, were 2,700. Of these, 895 have
already graduated, and 189 graduated on Saturday (Febuary 28), bringing the
total to 1,084. Later, gold and silver medals were also given to
outstanding students. Among them Sufi Farman Ali, Moomal Memon, Saba Memon and
Rizwana Panhwar were awarded gold medals, whereas the silver medals were awarded
to Zeeshan Memon, Soofi Farman Ali, Naeemuddin Awan, Moomal Memon, Qurat-ul-Ain
Qureshi and Saba Memon.
73 BISE position holders awarded
Hyderabad: Sindh Minister for Rural Development Zubair Ahmed Khan announced on
Sunday that the position holders of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary
Education (BISE), Hyderabad, would be awarded with gold and silver medals and
cash prizes on regular basis to promote competition among students. He also
announced to regularise those employees of the BISE, Hyderabad, who were working
on the daily-wage basis. He said this while addressing the awards
distribution ceremony, organised by the BISE, Hyderabad, for the position
holders of academic years 2004, 2005 and 2006 at the Public School Hyderabad
here. Later, about 73 position holders were awarded with medals and cash prizes.
The provincial minister presented Rs 10,000 each to Qari Inamul Haq and Agha
Gohar Ali on behalf of the governor for reciting Qirat and Naat in the

Library roof collapses
Jacobabad: The roof of Shah Abdul Latif library in Thull collapsed on
Sunday. They was no casualty because the library was closed.
Later, local people and political activists took out a procession to
protest against the incident. The procession started from the library chowk and
after passing through different roads, reached the press club. The
protesters were carrying banners and placards and raising slogans. They said
that the works department had been informed about the cracks but no action was
taken. Due to collapse of the roof, furniture and books were damaged.
The protesters demanded inquiry into the matter. They said that the
library was constructed six months ago at a cost of Rs5 million and alleged that
due to use of substandard material its roof collapsed, adds our Sukkur
correspondent. They demanded of the provincial minister for local bodies
to take action against corrupt TMA officials and the contractor.

Sindh University names hall after Prof Zakaria
Hyderabad: The University of Sindh honoured Prof Zakaria Sajid, a
teacher of Mass Communication Department, with a shield and naming a conference
hall at the Centre for Rural Development Communication after him in recognition
of his services, at a special ceremony held on Saturday. Vice-Chancellor
Dr Mazharul Haq Siddiqui who presided over the ceremony lauded Prof Zakaria's
services for the establishment of CRDC and his contribution to the Department of
Mass Communication. He said that Prof Zakaria had always helped the
university in selecting talented students and teachers. The university had over
time established a very transparent system for selection of teachers with
multiple filter processes, he claimed. Prof Zakaria said that his
association with Sindh spanned over half a century. He had worked in the USA on
a project for library development and he had helped Karachi University in the
establishment of the Department of Library Information Science, he said.
He said that journalists were advocates of society and this was the
first university of the country, which had set up a centre for rural development
communication. The centre's director Prof Ibadullah Rashidi said that
established in 2002 as academic branch of the faculty of social sciences, the
centre primarily served as clearinghouse of information on development
communication, problems and issues of rural areas. He said that the
centre was mandated to perform functions of training and capacity-building,
research and consulting, developmental networking and linkages. He said
that in addition to the HEC-funded research project on inventory of Mass Media
in Sindh, the centre had recently signed an agreement with a German
organisation, International Institute of Youth Education, to undertake
coordinated research on the impact of satellite TV on working children in Sindh.
Earlier, the vice-chancellor presented memento shield to Prof Zakaria
and inaugurated Prof Zakaria Sajid conference hall at the centre. He also
awarded certificates to candidates who had completed four-month professional
diploma certificate in the Rural Development Communication. Teachers of
the Department of Mass Communication of the University of Karachi, Dr Mehmood
Ghaznavi, Dr Nisar Ahmed Zuberi, Prof Inam Bari, Dr Tahir Masood, Dr S.U.
Saleem, family members of Prof Sajid and teachers of the Sindh University,
including pro-vice-chancellor Dr Rafia Ahmed Shaikh, Dean of Faculty of Social
Sciences Dr Iqbal Ahmed Panhwar, Prof Har Bux Makhijani, faculty members and
