PU announces BEd admission forms schedule
Lahore, March 02: The Punjab University (PU) has issued the schedule for submission of admission forms for BEd (Special Needs), 2nd Annual Examination, 2008 (Session 2007-2008) and Annual Examination, 2009 (Session 2008-2009).

The last date for submission of admission forms with single fee is 08-03-2010 while the forms can be submitted with double fee till 11-03-2010. The exam will commence from March 24, 2010. Detailed schedule is also available at the PU website www.pu.edu.pk

Meanwhile, according to a press statement, the PU has announced that Pharm-D, One-Year Condensed degree programme exam will continue according to the date sheet already issued by the Controller Examinations. PU professors appointments
Lahore: The Punjab University (PU) Syndicate, in its meeting on Monday, approved the appointments of nine retired university professors as Professor Emeritus.

According to a press release, the 1,682nd meeting of the PU Syndicate was chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran. The newly-appointed professors emeritus are: Prof Dr Khawaja Muhammad Zakriya (Urdu), Prof Dr AR Shakoori (Zoology), Prof Dr Hassan Askari Rizvi (Political Science), Prof Dr Muhammad Saleem (High Energy Physics), Prof Dr Syed Muhammad Akram Shah (Persian), Prof Dr Javed Iqbal (Botany), Prof Dr S Razi Abbas Shamsi (Botany), Prof Dr Khawaja Amjad Saeed (Business Administration) and Prof Dr Muhammad Nawaz Chaudhry (Geology).

The meeting also approved the appointment of MPA Khawaja Imran Nazir and the principal of the Postgraduate College for Girls, Madina Town, Faisalabad, Abida Fayyaz, as members Hall Council. Appointment of 68 teachers under a three years contract was also approved while the appointment of former Punjab Chief Secretary Pervez Masud and former Federal Secretary Mukhtar Masood as members of the Selection Board was agreed upon.

The syndicate gave its approval for two new posts of professors in the central pool and their transfer to the Institute of Communication Studies and Oriental College.

The meeting approved the nomination of Principal College of Art and Design Prof Rahat Naveed Masud and Director Centre for High Energy Physics Prof Dr Khawaja Haris Rashid as members of the University Oriental College Committee for a period of two years. The meeting gave its final approval to the recommendations of the Academic Council made in its meeting on 8-6-2009 and 26-10-2009 while it confirmed the proceedings of 1,681st meeting of the syndicate held on 31st December 2009.

Merger of shelter-less schools ordered
Lahore: School Education Department secretary Muhammad Aslam Kamboh has directed all EDOs (Education) to merge shelter-less schools, masjid/ maktab schools and non-functional schools before March 31, and, after regularization, shift the surplus staff to other staff-starved schools.

In a circular addressed to all DCOs, EDOs (Education) and district monitoring officers (DMOs), the secretary stated that a large number of shelter-less schools and masjid/ maktab schools were functioning in the same village, chak or locality where other government primary, elementary or high / HSS school for boys or girls were also present.

Some schools are non-functional due to defective selection of site not feasible for enrollment. The competent authority decided to finish the duplication and redundancy of the system, it added.

The circular said masjid/ maktab schools, built with government funds but having no government land or proper building, would be merged with regular boys or girls primary school or with a senior level school of the same village, Chak or locality. The schools would be merged even with girls schools, it said adding the merger would include staff, students, records, building, furniture, fixture, land and other assets and liabilities. If the staff of merged school exceeds from the student teacher ratio of 40:1, it would be rationalized and posted in other schools with short staff. Shelter-less and non-functional schools would also be merged on the same pattern taking due care of land and other assets.

The secretary said schools functioning in rented buildings would be merged in the nearest government schools of the distance prescribed in criteria. However, for schools working in rented building, the capacity and distance of the school to be merged with should be taken into notice.

A complete survey of schools falling in the subject categories would be done by EDO (Education) and DMO concerned. They may engage M&EAs, DTEs or other officers for this purpose. The district education officers concerned will be the focal person for schools working under them.

The circular said a committee would be constituted under the chair of DCO with EDO (F&P), EDO (Education), district account officers and DMO to implement the policy and settle the anomalies.

KC, private institute fined for holding 'commercial' concerts
Lahore: The Punjab Excise and Taxation Department has imposed Rs 238,000 and Rs 158,000 as fines on the Kinnaird College for Women and a leading private educational institute, respectively, for organizing musical concerts on commercial basis.

The officials of the department said that both the institutes had sought permission to organize concerts on non-commercial basis on Monday night, adding, however, the institutions had charged Rs 500 and Rs 400 per person respectively.

Excise & Taxation Officer (Entertainment) Amjad Mehmood Warraich said both the educational institutions had submitted Rs 20,000 each as security fee to organize concerts on non-commercial basis.

"However, when our teams visited the venues, it was learnt that the events were organised on commercial basis as the participants were sold the tickets", he added. He added they had recorded statements of students and their families who confirmed that they had bought the tickets.

Assistant Excise & Taxation Officer Sheikh Naeem Qadir said they had submitted the challan of the KC and Salamat-ICAS with the Region-B director who would serve the same on both the institutes and summon them for hearing.

He said, as per law, 65 percent of the total amount was charged as duty in case such event was organised on commercial basis. He said, after calculating the number of participants, the department had imposed the fine accordingly.

When contacted, KC principal Dr Bernadette L Dean said the college had organised the event purely on non-commercial basis for the students, adding, however, some miscreants got printed fake tickets and sold them among other female students.

When asked how outsiders could enter the concert premises, she said it was difficult to stop every female student, adding most of them had entered quite early. The newsman could not contact any official from Salamat-ICAS. The news

Veterinary varsity inaugurated
Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that development of southern Punjab will result in the progress of the whole province and the country as well therefore such institutions are being set up in education, health, livestock and other sectors in this region that will also benefit the people of other provinces.

Speaking on the occasion of foundation stone laying ceremony of University of Veterinary Sciences in Bahawalpur Monday, the chief minister also announced setting up of the first livestock teaching hospital in the area.

The veterinary university and hospital would cost Rs3.5 billion. The chief minister said this university would be of international standard on the pattern of University of Glasgow of Britain for which services of experts from all over the world will be acquired.

The CM was informed in a briefing that arrangements would be made for lectures at the university through satellite from Glasgow and other centers of the world. It was further informed that the university to be set up over 2,000 acres of land will be the first veterinary university of its kind in Asia and admission will be given in graduate, postgraduate and MPhil classes. He said the construction work was being immediately started.

The chief minister directed that the project should be implemented expeditiously and special attention should be paid to maintaining a high standard on the pattern of Danish Schools. He said university should be made an autonomous institution. KEMU 19th annual course
Lahore: Pak-Army Surgeon General Lt. General Muhammad Rehan Burny has said the King Edward Medical University (KEMU) is one of the best medical institutions in the world.

He was addressing a function held in connection with the 19th annual course on Diabetics Mellitus here on Monday. He said he was honored that top five position holders in Medical Corp of Pak-Army were Kemicolians.

He said whenever Pak-Army needed medical services, KEMU had always been in the forefront. Professor Zafar Ullah Khan said the main purpose of the course was to refresh the doctors about the modern management of diabetes.

Professor Mehmood Ali Malik, President Pakistan Diabetics Association, said the purpose of the course, started in 1982, was to train doctors, nurses and paramedical staff to control diabetes mellitus and its complications.

Stress management workshops
Lahore: Government College University Vice-Chancellor Dr Khalid Aftab on Monday announced holding health and stress management workshops for the university staff and students.

According to a press release, Dr Aftab was addressing a general house meeting of the university staff. He said that noted health experts would be invited to the university in this regard.

Earlier, talking to a delegation of students, the GCU VC advised them to rely on hard work for success.

He said the global recession had affected the graduates and universities and it called for serious review of existing academic programmes and research agendas for the future. The news
