Roll No slips dispatched for class IX exam
Lahore, Mar 15: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE), Lahore, on Monday announced that it
had dispatched roll number slips to the candidates appearing in Secondary School
Part-I (Class IX) Annual Examination, 2011, commencing from March 21. In
a press statement, a BISE spokesman said in case of non-receipt of roll number
slips, the private candidates must contact the Board of Intermediate and
Secondary Education office by March 17, 2011. Meanwhile, he said, papers
in the subjects of Physics, Islamiyat (Elective), Al-Fiqah and Military Science
for the ongoing Secondary School Part-II (Class X) Annual Examination, 2011,
were held peacefully on Monday in all the centres established in five districts
of the Lahore division.

LCWU contests
Lahore: Two different
competitions were held at the Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) during
the ongoing Inter-Collegiate and Inter-University Competitions on
Monday. The competitions, organised by the varsity's Punjabi Society,
were participated by Government APWA College, Jinnah Degree College, Fatima
Jinnah College, Samanabad College and Government Islamia College, Lahore. In the
Sufiana Kalam competition, the first, second and third prizes were won by Hafiza
Rakhshanda, Sajida Mushtaq and Noor ul Iain Mazhar respectively while in the Lok
Geet competition Khadija Naaz, Sana Batool and Amina Nisaar won respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Kausar Jamaal Cheema said there was a need to
promote Punjabi culture in society.

GCU honours debaters, orators
Lahore: The Government College University's Debating
Society on Monday hosted a reception in honour of its 14 best orators who have
performed exceptionally well during the last six months and won 22 team trophies
and 34 best speaker awards. Addressing the debaters, GCU Acting Vice Chancellor
Prof Dr Ikramul Haq said that the GCU debates enabled students to express their
views effectively.

QAU Book Expo 2011 draws large crowd
Islamabad: The Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) Book Expo-2011 started here on Monday on the university
campus. QAU History Department in association with university's DRSM
central library and Higher Education Commission (HEC) has onranised this two-day
event to cultivate the reading habit that is sharply on the verge of decline in
this age of technology. A large number of Quaidians and students from
far-flung areas of Rawalpindi and Islamabad thronged the Expo venue, QAU Social
Sciences parking area. QAU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Masoom Yasinzai
inaugurated the Expo and acknowledged the meritorious work done by QAU History
Department's chairperson and faculty. Faculty members of history,
economics, anthropology and International Relations (IR) departments were also
present on the occasion. Yasinzai urged the people particularly the
students to develop the book reading habit for enriching their knowledge. " This
is a good effort by History Department with a core objective to revive the
declining reading culture in the academic institutions. It would help promote
book reading among youngsters," the VC added. Fouzia Farooq, the young faculty member of History Department, said that they
had organised this the Expo to encourage people to study more. "We want to see
the habit of going through books in every one in our society," she said, adding,
book reading sharpens the creativity of a human being. "Our aim is to
reach out to the colleges, universities and the literary circles of the twin
cities and acquaint them with the interesting and latest books and researches
that are being produced all over the world," she said. The response of visitors
is overwhelming, she said smilingly. It is universally recognised that
there is no alternative to book to build a knowledge-based society, Farooq
said. QAU History Department's Chairperson Dr Razia Sultana said the
activity had been organised to encourage people to read books and provide
students with books at affordable prices. Over 20 national and
international booksellers and publishers have displayed books and publications
on diverse subjects ranging from socio-political to religio-economic, fiction,
literature and history to original research work. The book sellers/
publishers and research institutions including Centre of Civic Education (CCE),
Oxford University Press (OUP), Vanguard Books, World Book Corner, National
Institute of Historical and Culture Research (NIHCR), Taxila Institute of Asian
Civilization, US Educational Foundation Pakistan (USEFP), Pakistan Institute of
Development Economics (PIDE), Jinnah Book Company, Pakistan Scientific and
Technological Information Centre, Eagle Books, Multiline Books, Islamabad Policy
Research Institute (IPRI), and Christian Study Centre (CSC) displayed their
recent publications offering 30 to 50 percent discount. "I am a keen
lover of reading books and I believe no matter this world has become a global
village and all published material is available on internet through e-books,
desktop or laptop wont give me as much pleasure as I feel reading a book holding
in my hand," said a student. In the evening, the stalls that sell Urdu
Literature including romantic poetry and prose saw even a greater crowd, as the
fans of popular writers swarmed the stalls to buy the copies of their favourite
writers. The fair, also featured cultural events such as poetry
recitation, songs and dances on the strings of guitar by QAU students. The
faculty members, students, the notables and dignitaries of Rawalpindi and
Islamabad also attended the event. Today (Tuesday) is the final day of this Expo
that will remain open from 09am to 4pm for book lovers. The news

Briefing on new exam system
Rawalpindi: Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education on Monday directed all candidate appearing
in the secondary school certificate part-I examination to attend a briefing at
their examination centers one day before the start of exam.
The board authorities said all candidates would appear in their examination
centers on March 20 as SSC-I papers would start on March 21 as they would be
briefed on the new answer sheets and new method of attempting objective
papers. BISE Official Spokesperson Arsalan Cheema said the superintendents, deputy
superintendents and resident inspectors concerned would be present at the
examination centres to brief the candidates about how to use newly designed
answer sheets and new method of attempting objective part of the paper.
According to new system, the examination board has introduced answer sheets
with bar codes to keep the identity of the candidates. The answer sheet will
have a bar sheet with two parts that will duly be filled by the candidates.
The front part would be separated from the answer sheet by the invigilators
before handing them over to the examiners and it will be kept by the secrecy
department without knowing where the answers sheets were being evaluated, the
BISE official said.
The part B of the bar sheet will remain pasted on the back side of the answer
sheet. The evaluator will mention the marks of the candidates on the given
columns in the B part without knowing the identity of the candidates. Dawn

Sports gala starts at IIU
Islamabad: The Annual Sports Gala 2011 started at the International Islamic University (IIU)
here on Monday. Professor Dr. Safeer Awan, adviser (male students) of the
university, inaugurated the gala. Faculty of Shariah Dean Dr. Muhammad
Zia-ul-Haq and Deputy Director Sports Syed Manzoor Hussain Shah and a large
