HEC to establish bioequivalence testing centre
ISLAMABAD, March 12(Daily Times): The Planning Commission Central Development Working
Party (CDWP) has approved a project of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to
set up a centre for bioequivalence studies and bioassay research (CBSBR).
The research centre will be set up at the Hussain Ebrahim Jamal (HEJ)
Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi.
The proposed
CBSBR will offer, for the first time in Pakistan, a certified reference
laboratory that will conduct bioequivalence evaluations on drugs and develop
generic pharmaceutical products according to standards followed in Europe, USA,
and Japan. The project will provide testing services to Pakistani pharmaceutical
companies and evaluate their products in the country and the companies will be
able to use the service to register their products in other countries where such
tests are a requirement. The decision is expected to have a significant impact
on the export potential of Pakistani pharmaceutical companies.
The
resulting improvement in the quality of pharmaceutical products in Pakistan will
help reduce treatment costs, improve healthcare and make treatments of diseases
more affordable.
The centre will also have facilities of analytical
methods of development, certification of assays, dispute resolution between drug
companies and the Ministry of Health.
The research centre will offer
three services, including bioequivalence evaluation of pharmaceutical drug
products, certified laboratory testing and bioassay research facilities. The
centre will be a teaching facility for analytical methods development and
documentation and will generate revenues for the institute.
The CBSBR
will also offer contract research services to the pharmaceutical industry and
academic researchers and a state-of-the-art bioassay development facility.
Herbal medicines are widely used in the country and significant efforts
have been made, both in Pakistan and the rest of world, to identify bioactive
components in them. The centre will also help this task and offer the service to
academia and the industry to check the potency of herbal medicine. The center
will have complete testing facilities, including clinical monitoring of patents,
blood sample analysis, statistical analysis and evaluation of equivalence of
products.
