Govt to make educational institutions 'politics-free'
ISLAMABAD, March 17(Daily Times): The government will provide a
"politics-free environment" in educational institutions to improve the quality
of education in the country, said Labour, Manpower and Overseas Pakistanis
Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan on Friday.
Addressing an 'Award Distribution
Ceremony for Outstanding Performance' here at the Overseas Pakistani Foundation
(OPF) Girls College, the minister said some people were politicising educational
institutions for their personal benefit.
He said the foundation intended
to streamline the appointment process in its educational institutions to provide
quality education.
Khan said the new process would bring uniformity in
the selection criteria for the teaching staff. "OPF will provide job security on
the basis of performance and merit, and teachers will get better terms of
service regarding their salary packages and other benefits", he added. The
minister said that the teachers' protest had damaged the institution's
repute.
"We will not allow anyone to politicise OPF's educational
institutes for their personal benefits," said Khan.
He said the
government was taking all possible measures to set up more educational
institutes in the country. He appreciated the achievements and plans of the OPF,
and said the government had decided to establish various educational institutes
under OPF's umbrella, adding that four such institutes would be set up during
the current fiscal year in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Hangu and
Shaikhupura.
The minister also announced scholarship programmes for OPF's
distinguished students.
Earlier, OPF Managing Director Mushtaq Ahmed and
OPF Principal Dr Shahina Khan highlighted the achievements of the OPF College in
the promotion of quality education.
