Seminaries to teach FBISE syllabus
ISLAMABAD, March 19(Daily Times): The government and Ittehad
Tanzimat-e-Madaris-e-Deenya (ITMD) have agreed to form an inter-madrassa board
and the ITMD has also expressed willingness to teach the curriculum of the
Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) in
seminaries.
Sources privy to a meeting between the government and the
ITMD said that the five wafaqs representing various schools of
thought would start teaching the FBISE curricula in seminaries soon.
"Under this agreement, the government will give the five wafaqs the
status of an examination board so that they can issue secondary school
certificates recognised countrywide," said the sources, adding that the
government would later allow the wafaqs to issue higher secondary school
certificates.
The sources said that the inter-madrassa board would work
as an institution to ensure quality education, adding that a chairman would lead
the board consisting of a deputy chairman, the education secretary, the
religious affairs secretary, an official of the Higher Education Commission and
a scholar. They said that the government would nominate the board secretary.
The sources said that the government and the ITMD had differences over
the nomination of the chairman and deputy chairman and the issue would be
discussed in a meeting between Religious Affairs Minister Ejazul Haq and the
ITMD leaders.
They said that after giving the status of examination
boards to the five wafaqs like the Aga Khan Board, the government would nominate
two representatives for each board, adding that the inter-madrassa board would
monitor the examination process and marking system of the five wafaqs. A board
failing to come up to the mark would be suspended, said the sources.
The
sources said that the wafaqs would have to give an undertaking that they were
not imparting military training to students and publishing or distributing hate
material, adding that the wafaqs would also inform the government about the
seminaries linked with them
The sources said that the Education Ministry
was not willing to give the status of boards to the wafaqs, saying that most of
the seminaries were not affiliated with these wafaqs. They added that the
establishment of the inter-madrassa board would be notified next month after
approval by President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.
