Atta warns private universities to shape up
Karachi, March 19(The News): Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman, Federal Minister and Chairman, Higher Education
Commission (HEC) has warned private sector universities to enhance their
standard of instruction and bring it at par with the world universities or face
the cancellation of the charter given to them.
The warning salvo from
Prof Atta-ur-Rahman was fired while he spoke at the Convocation 2007 of the Sir
Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSEUT), as their chief guest on
Saturday.
"No more Ivory Towers in the realm of higher education. Either
endow quality education to the students or cease to be degree-conferring
universities", he warned. The offending universities will be degraded to the
level of colleges, he added.
Talking to the graduating students, the HEC
chairman said that the world was witnessing a "knowledge explosion" and the
countries that failed to join the bandwagon would be left far behind. He
lamented the fact that the Muslim countries had 70 per cent resources of the
world but that their combined GDP was less than that of Federal Republic of
Germany. Austria and Belgium had half the population of Karachi but still
enjoyed far more GDP and Literacy rate than Pakistan.
The mismatch was
due to their excellence in education and firm grasp in the field of science and
technology, he elaborated. The HEC had considered this disparity and increased
its budget to 2000 per cent in order to bring more education to the masses. The
HEC had begun to increase the number of PhDs in the country and about 1200
students had been sent abroad for their doctoral degrees. The number of PhD
scholars, who were working for their higher degrees in the country was in
thousands. He advised the graduating students not to compromise their integrity
as done by many others.
Chancellor of the university and former chief of
KDA, Z. A. Nizami, talked about the progress of SSUET and proudly claimed that
it had carved a niche in the international educational fraternity. The
university had 50 linkages with UK universities alone and its graduates were
accepted by foreign universities, he disclosed.
