Varsities to be connected through high-speed network
ISLAMABAD, March 19(Daily Times): The Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the
Pakistan Telecommunication Company (PTCL) have launched an initiative to connect
all universities and degree awarding institutes in the country through a
high-speed network.
The HEC intends to increase interaction among
Pakistani academicians, students and intelligentsia with peers across the globe
and to facilitate knowledge transfer, learning and innovation through this
project.
PTCL will connect 85 universities that are part of the Pakistan
Education and Research Network (PERN) and presently connects 59 schools of
higher learning through the intranet and Internet. The new project will connect
PERN's 85 schools and at a later stage will include an other 134 universities
and campuses.
PTCL will provide the Internet through both wireless and
wire line technologies. The purpose of the project is to restructure PERN and to
provide a reliable and secure connectivity via PTCL.
PERN is a
nationwide educational network connecting the country's educational and research
institutions. PERN focuses on collaborative research, knowledge and resource
sharing and distance learning by connecting people using both intranet and
Internet resources. PERN intends to disseminate knowledge and empower the next
generation to compete with the ever-changing world.
The new project will
enable Pakistani students and professors to interact with the rest of the world
in the fields of medical science, information technology, biomedical engineering
and sciences, biophysics, telemedicine practices and subjects related to the
humanities.
