Setting up of 50 'model colleges' still a far cry
KARACHI, March 2(The News): The 50 designated Model Colleges in Sindh are yet to see the day when
they become functional and cater to the needs of students-aspiring to acquire
quality education near their homes.
It may be recalled that Dr Muhammad
Ali Shaikh, Provincial Education Manager (PEM) (colleges) Sindh, had announced
in August 2006 that efforts were being made to transform at least one
intermediate college in each town of Karachi into a 'model college' for
providing admissions to the meritorious students, possibly near the areas of
their residence.
Dr Shaikh had advanced the idea to enable the top
achievers in the SSC examinations to securing seats in colleges in the vicinity
of their homes.
Such colleges were to be upgraded in such a way that
they became seats of standard learning for the best students. The general
tendency among the students is to seek admission in a few prestigeous colleges
of the city.
The meritorious students are usually able to get admissions
in prestigious colleges but the commuting between home and college consumes a
lot of time.
The News contacted Dr Shaikh on Thursday to remind him
about his announcement about the establishment of the model colleges and to ask
why it had not materialised to date. "I standby with the promise and have
already taken steps to make the proposed plan a success," he said and added that
the PC-1 had been issued to acquire infrastructure and equipment for the
colleges that would be upgraded as model colleges.
"The shortcomings of
the colleges that are to be upgraded and science laboratories would be improved
to cater to the need of students," he said.
Dr Shaikh said that out of
50 model colleges, Karachi would have 20 colleges while the rest of the province
would have 30 colleges.
Tenders have been floated to get the contractors
start working on the project. At least one model college would be set up in all
the 18 towns of the city plus two more would be established in large towns that
have larger populations.
