NED convocation: Bachelors & Masters degrees awarded
Karachi, March 9(The News): The NED University of Engineering and Technology conferred 1708
Bachelors and 182 Masters Degrees in various disciplines to its graduates of the
class of 2007 on Thursday. It also awarded 45 gold medals to its outstanding
students who had secured the top three positions in different examinations.
Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad, Governor of Sindh, was to preside over the
convocation, but could not make it due to some urgent business. Dr Javed Arshad
Mirza, Chairman, Pakistan Council of Scientific & Industrial Research
(PCSIR) delivered the Convocation address.
The Convocation was
distinguished by its discipline and the graceful manner in which the proceedings
took place. The absence of ear-piercing music was absolutely refreshing.
Engr. Abul Kalam, Vice Chancellor of NED, declared the convocation open
and reminded the audience that his university had enhanced educational standards
within a decade and convocations were also being held on time. The number of
undergraduate students admitted in different disciplines in the academic year
2006-07 was 1494, compared to the 680 students that were admitted in four
disciplines in 1996-97. The improvement was the result of concrete and
coordinated efforts of the staff of the university. The number will increase to
2070 by 2009-10, and there will not be any compromise on the educational
standards of the university.
Dr Mirza reminded the graduating students
that they had an obligation to the society and the country to deliver the best
of their professional knowledge, and work tirelessly to achieve a phenomenal
progress. Education was pivotal to human progress, and a French Philosopher once
said: 'after bread, education.' The fresh graduates should prove that education
had carved a sense of serving the country without expecting much from it.
