Punjab University not ready to accept plagiarists
LAHORE, March 19(Daily Times): The Punjab University (PU)
while exhibiting 'zero tolerance' against plagiarists turned down application of
a sacked 'plagiarist' seeking to rejoin teaching profession at the varsity.
On condition of anonymity, a Punjab University
College of Information Technology (PUCIT) official said assistant professor
Muhammad Atif Chattha was sacked on 12 October 2006. He had plagiarised two
research articles Service Oriented Computing Model for G2g Transaction and
Service Oriented Computing Model for E-Government.
He said the
application of the sacked teacher was turned down by the administration on the
pretext that he had brought bad name to the varsity.
He said Chattha had
presented the articles at COMSATS, Abbottabad, on April 29, 2005, and at the
LUMS (December 9, 2005) respectively.
He said a committee headed by
PUCIT principal Prof Syed Mansoor Sarwar probed the matter and found the
allegations correct. According to the inquiry report, he said, Chattha had
plagiarised research articles of foreign authors including three French
scholars, Lina Al-Chaal, Vincent Roca, and Michel Habert (Proceedings of the
IEEE, International Conference on Web Services, 2004).
He said Chattha
had been found guilty of copying paragraphs from, An Infrastructure for
E-Government Based on Semantic Web Services, a joint thesis of three Chinese
scholars, Liuming Lu, Guojing Zhu and Jiazun Chen, of the Donghua University,
China (Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Service Computing, 2004).
He said Chattha was also accused of reproducing research articles of
Mark A Malinoski of the American Education Services.
He said the case
was referred to the PU vice chancellor (VC) Arshad Mehmood.
The VC had
given a chance to Chattha to defend his case, but to no avail. He said Chattha
was a contract employee of the varsity. PU Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan
said Chattha was removed from the service following evidence of plagiarism. "He
cannot perform the professional duties at the PUCIT," Dr Khan added.
On
the alleged plagiarism charges against five teachers of the PU Centre for Higher
Energy Physics (CHEP), he said, the inquiry committee would soon submit its
final report.
The Higher Education Commission has withheld Rs 139
million grant of the PU for its failure to decide the plagiarism case against
the five CHEP teachers.
