'Political parties have no role in education'
LAHORE, March 20(Daily Times): Governor Khalid Maqbool urged
students on Monday to ignore the lure of political parties.
Addressing
the inaugural ceremony of the 12th All Pakistan Geographical Conference, the
governor said that an isolationist policy was not workable in the emerging
global scenario. "Pakistan will be unable to attract foreign visitors if the
outside world thinks we are not giving women and minorities their rights." The
governor also addressed students at the Punjab University Institute of
Communication Studies (ICS). He said that the government wanted to create an
atmosphere in which students can think independently. He urged the students to
show the moderate side of Islam to the world.
Maqbool said that some
students were involved in political work on the campus. He said, "I assure you
that PU would not have even a single security guard if there is no political
party presence." Maqbool urged the students to ignore the judicial crisis and
focus on their studies. The governor said that President General Pervez
Musharraf would honour his commitment to hold free and fair elections in the
country.
The governor said that the situation in Iran was of great
concern to Pakistan. Pakistan's relations with India are on the right track, he
said.
Maqbool said that the establishment of the Gujranwala campus was a
great achievement for PU. People of remote areas now have access to higher
education, he said. He urged the varsity's vice-chancellor to introduce courses
in development sciences, NGO development and engineering technology. He asked
the VC to get 10 more buses for varsity students to solve their transportation
problems. He asked the PU administration to provide accommodation to female
students on priority basis. New hostels should be constructed for students, he
added.
Maqbool said that public universities were providing quality
education for low fees. They were producing civil servants and bank executives
who will play important roles in international institutes, he added.
Maqbool agreed with a student that the fees of morning classes should be
lesser than those for evening classes. He asked the varsity administration to
examine the matter. The governor said that the PU administration should launch a
social service programme. "Students should be involved with the community," he
said. Work should be arranged in schools, hospitals and other sectors on a
monthly basis, he said.
Maqbool said that the National Testing Service
would conduct the entry test for admissions in undergraduate programmes for all
universities in the Punjab.
Earlier, PU vice-chancellor, Arshad Mahmood,
welcomed the governor. He said that the development of PU was only possible
because of the chancellor's interest in the varsity. He said that the governor's
visits encouraged the students to work harder. PU registrar
Prof Dr
Muhammad Naeem Khan and several faculty members were present on the occasion. PU
Geography Department chairman, Dr Abdul Ghaffar also spoke at the
inauguration.
