UET's 18th convocation
LAHORE, March 16(Daily Times): President General Pervez
Musharraf said on Thursday, that there was a need to boost the knowledge base
for permanent economic growth in the country.
He was addressing the
graduates of the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore at its
18th convocation. He said that the preparation of value-added products was
required to sustain a position in the international market.
The
president congratulated the students on winning medals and degrees. He praised
the parents present for their efforts in this regard. He praised the services of
UET vice-chancellor, Muhammad Akram. He said the varsity had achieved a high
standard of education under his management. The government is working on a plan
promoting quality education, he said. A substantial investment has been made for
higher education in the Engineering field, he added.
President Musharraf
said that the government would send 2,000 students to foreign universities for
their PhD studies. A sum of Rs 15 billion has been approved for this purpose, he
added. He said that the universities of various countries including, Germany,
France, Britain, Sweden, Austria, Italy, Japan, China and South Korea wanted to
set up their campuses in Pakistan.
He said that Rs 250 billion had been
set aside for the establishment of nine engineering universities. Foreign
faculty would be hired to teach in them, he added. They would set their own
coursework and give their own degrees, he added.
